Hi! It’s been a long time since I’ve introduced myself and there are some new faces here, so I thought it was time for a little reintroduction.

I’m Laura and I’m the owner/therapist of Root and Flourish Counselling Services!

If you’re my client, you know who I am as a therapist.

So here are some fun facts about me (aside from being a therapist):
- I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s/2000s - I’m a millennial through and through and love a good millennial meme
- My taste in music is pretty eclectic - I have a shockingly good memory for old R&B/hip hop and pop song lyrics. Nowadays, I’m more of a country music girl
- I come from a family of avid gardeners and find a lot of joy and peace when I’m getting my hands in the dirt and surrounded by nature
- When I’m not working, you can find me chasing after my toddler, decorating a room in the house, or out in the garden
- My guilty pleasure is reality TV ‘love’ shows, so you can always count on me to be caught up on Love Island and Love is Blind shows
- Growing up, I wanted to be a marine biologist because I was obsessed with whales. Until we had to dissect a pig in biology class 🤮 and that was the end of that dream 🤣
- My favourite colour is green 💚🌱🍃

I have clients that apologize for crying, not knowing what to talk about, or spending the whole session venting about something. None of these require an apology - they are totally normal parts of the therapy experience. It doesn’t mean you’re doing therapy wrong or misusing the time.

And if something does feel off with a therapy session - talk about it with your therapist!

Heal the root, so the tree is stable.

We are the tree.

We may seem like we’re learning to manage symptoms, but if we don’t tend to our core issues (the “root” of it all), our foundation won’t hold up and we won’t feel stable. Without a strong foundation, a tree will topple over and this applies to humans as well.

When you work with me, symptom management is only a small piece of the work. I love to help clients address the root of their concerns, so they can feel stable and thrive. This type of therapy is not easy - it is hard work. It is a financial, emotional and time commitment. But believe me, it is so worth it.

Heal the root, so the tree is stable. You deserve that stability ❤️

I’m diving deep into learning more about boundaries, why we struggle with setting them, and how to manage the reaction to our boundaries.

In her book, Drama Free, speaks about dysfunctional families (although, I think this applies to all relationships!) and four common responses from others when we set boundaries:

1) Disapproval: being unhappy with a change in the status quo of the relationship
2) Shame: making someone feel like a terrible person for wanting something different in the relationship - often a form of control
3) Pushback: completely disregarding the boundary or pressuring someone to change their mind
4) Resentment: being angry and hurt that you want the relationship to be different

Boundaries are hard. They’re hard to set and even harder to stick to when we experience responses like the above. We might receive a response like the above and back pedal on our boundaries because we’re nervous about losing the relationship. I see this a lot in my clients who struggle with people pleasing - the discomfort at the thought of losing the relationship trumps the discomfort of the status quo. Does this sound like you? This was me once too, and let me tell you, it let me right down the burnout and resentment path.

I’ve always cringed at the word “needy”. There’s such a negative connotation around having “too many” needs.

I was listening to the We Can Do Hard Things podcast last night where they interviewed . The conversation centralized around boundaries and expressing our needs in relationships.

An interesting point was made. To be human is to have needs. None of us are needless humans. We are ALL needy - it’s part of our humanness. Where we differ is if/when and how often we express those needs.

So, if there’s ever a moment where you feel like your needs are a lot, or if you’ve been told you’re too needy, remember your needs are not too much. You are human.
