If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, helpless, or even guilty about the state of the planet, you’re not alone. This is called eco-anxiety and it’s very common.

From a psychology and CBT perspective, eco-anxiety isn’t something we need to get rid of, it’s something we can learn to cope with and channel into meaningful action (without burning out).

Over the years, Taylor Swift has shared many words of wisdom that align with the principles we use in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).

From reminding us that mistakes don’t define who we are to encouraging courage in the face of fear, her reflections echo key strategies used in therapy: reframing unhelpful thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and finding strength in uncertainty. It’s a good reminder that psychology and everyday wisdom often meet in the same place helping us build resilience, perspective, and balance.

If you or someone you love is experiencing difficulties with their mental health, the registered psychologists and psychotherapists at the Waterloo CBT Clinic are available to help.

Virtual and in person appointments are available.

For more information or to make an appointment, please call, email or visit our website.

“Failure to launch" is not a clinical diagnosis but it is a common term used to describe young adults who struggle to transition into independent adulthood. It impacts millions of families. It might look like living at home long-term, avoiding work or school, and lacking motivation to pursue goals. The root causes are varied and include mental health conditions, family dynamics, low self-esteem, and external stressors like economic hardship. Parent coaching is often a central aspect of treatment, giving parents the tools and skills to help them support their child without reinforcing unhelpful behaviours. Support for the child can also be helpful to give them the tools and skills to overcome underlying mental health concerns that may be contributing.

Do you find yourself stuck in loops of distressing thoughts and repetitive behaviours, wondering why you can’t just stop?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than just being neat or particular. It’s a mental health condition that can be exhausting, isolating, and misunderstood - but it’s also treatable.

In this post, we break down what OCD really is, how it shows up, and how therapy - especially CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) can help you break the cycle.

More information about OCD and it’s treatment can be found on our website: https://waterloocbt.ca/blog/understanding-ocd-and-how-cbt-can-help/

Stress and Anxiety – What’s the Difference?

Stress and anxiety can feel similar, but they’re not the same. Stress is a response to an external pressure—like deadlines, exams, or a big event—and usually fades once the situation is over. Anxiety, on the other hand, is more persistent and internal, often showing up even without a clear reason. While stress is a natural reaction, anxiety can interfere with daily life and may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, evidence-based treatments are available.

Have you ever noticed that one bad comment sticks with you more than ten compliments? That’s negativity bias—our brain’s natural tendency to pay more attention to negative experiences than positive ones. It’s a survival mechanism that once helped our ancestors stay alert to danger, but today, it can make us dwell on criticism, failures, or worries more than necessary. The good news? You can train your brain to break the cycle by practicing gratitude and reframing negative thoughts using CBT skills. Shift your focus, and watch your mindset change!
