Need a cozy pick-me-up on this dreary Wednesday evening? Try this Golden Milk latte with coconut milk (ready in 5 minutes!). Golden milk is used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine and is satisfying, warming, and anti-inflammatory thanks to the ginger, cinnamon, and curcumin (found in turmeric).

Black pepper helps you absorb the active ingredient curcumin from the turmeric.
The healthy fats from the coconut milk help you absorb the curcumin too. You can use canned coconut milk, OR you can add 2 tsp coconut oil and use another dairy free milk.

Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisking until hot (don't let it get to a boil). Pour into a mug and enjoy!

* 1 tsp ground turmeric
* 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
* 1/4 tsp ground ginger
* pinch of black pepper or 4 whole peppercorns
* 2 cups coconut milk
* 1-2 tbsp honey or maple syrup or coconut sugar or monkfruit to taste

Today I'm going to share a simple test you can do at home to see if you're constipated. It's called the Transit Time Test.

💩 What the heck is transit time? Simply put-- it's the length of time it takes for food to go through your digestive tract and wind up at the end of the line-- the toilet. You can get a better idea of how well you're assimilating and absorbing your nutrients (and how efficiently you're moving out waste) from how quickly things move through your digestive tract.

The test results:

💩 12 hours or less could lead to malabsorption of nutrients (typically a 6 or 7 on the Bristol chart indicating diarrhea)

💩 24 hours or longer indicates slow transit time, which can increase your risk of colon disease (typically a 1-2 on the Bristol chart indicating constipation).

💩 Goal: 12-24 hours of transit time. Water intake, fiber content of your diet, microbes in your gut, stress levels, and medications can all play a role in your transit time.

Struggling with constipation and want more info on how naturopathic medicine and physiotherapy can help? and I are offering a FREE 15 min call with both of us, or either of us (for new clients and Ontario residents only). DM me or Laura to book your call!

This week and I are talking all things p**p! 💩 Do you think you're constipated? You may want to think again...

Constipation is typically defined as fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, but some people p**p everyday and can still be constipated! Yep. Some people eliminate on a daily basis but the amount is insufficient and they stay chronically backed up. shared some amazing info about what constipation is and common myths yesterday-- definitely check her post out!!

💩 It's important to be evaluated by your health care practitioner to determine the cause of constipation. For uncomplicated constipation, ensuring adequate hydration, movement, fiber intake and supporting a healthy diet are great places to start when it comes to supporting regular, complete BMs. It's also important to know constipation can be a symptom of another illness, so ruling out secondary causes of constipation, like hypothyroidism, is key.

💩 Poor waste elimination from chronic constipation can be linked to hormone imbalances and painful periods (estrogen dominance, I'm looking at you), fatigue, headaches, acne, and increased risk of colon disease. One of the first things I ask my patients about when they're struggling with any of the above concerns is: what's going on with your bowels and digestive health? Are you p**ping everyday? Are you p**ping enough everyday? Estrogen is a hormone that is eliminated via stool. If you're constipated, bacteria in the colon have more time to reabsorb that estrogen from the stool, and put it back into circulation. Estrogen dominance is associated with heavier, more painful periods, acne, and epic PMS.

💩 People with chronic constipation have fewer anti-inflammatory microbes (read: the good guys) in their guts. Disturbances in the microbiome can then affect neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin, which are made in the gut, and can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. In other words, chronic constipation has a huge impact on multiple aspects of your health!
