'Core' training is an important part of any hockey players' off-season strength and conditioning program to help reduce the risk of injuries such as osteitis p***s, abdominal muscle tears, sports hernia and groin strains. The 'Core' muscles aid in the stabilization and movement of the trunk, acting as the great transmitter of force from the lower extremities to the upper extremities. NY Islanders forward John Tavares suffered a season ending knee injury during the teams quarter final game against Latvia. Reports indicate Tavares suffered a tear to his MCL and meniscus. Here is a little education about what these structures are. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the knee protects the knee from sudden stress or excessive movement during a valgus (knock knees) stress. The ligaments (the ACL is another major ligament injured in sports) of the knee are vulnerable when there is a sudden, 'forceful' stress the body does not have time to react to. In this situation the muscles surrounding the knee cannot protect the knee joint as they do not have sufficient time to react and provide stability. The ligaments provide stability in this sudden, forceful situation - and when the force is too great (as you can see in the video) for the ligament to withstand - the tissue tears and becomes injured. Often - with an injury like this, the meniscus (cartilage) of the knee is involved due to the attachment of the MCL to the medial meniscus. Again, the impact is so sudden and forceful that something must 'give' in this case it was Tavares' MCL and meniscus. Tavares will require extensive Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation to get ready for next season. In this instance he is luck he did not also tear his ACL (another major ligament in the knee) - an injury known as the terrible triad. Tavares does not require surgery as his meniscus damage is minimal, and they do not repair partial tears of the MCL. Tavares will need to let the MCL heal while focusing on regaining his strength, stability and power in the left knee. This is Tavares second major injury on the left knee.

Active Release Techniques can be provided at Depth Physiotherapy & Sports Rehab specifically for the muscles of the hip to help with recovery and reduce the risk of repetitive use injury during hockey season - especially the playoffs. A.R.T. is used to keep the muscle tissue healthy, extensible and strong. Our treatment protocol focuses on the Hip Rotators, Gluteal Complex, TFL/ITB, Adductors, Quadriceps and the Gastroc/Soles complex.

Depth Recovery Tip: The Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL) muscle is a key muscle used by hockey players during both power production in stride length (Hip Abduction) and recovery in stride frequency (Hip Internal Rotation, Hip Flexion). As a result, the TFL muscle tends to be overworked during the hockey season, often resulting in a shorter resting muscle fibre length and reduced muscle extensibility. When this TFL muscle becomes short and fibrotic, it affects the muscular balance of the hip in a negative way leading to an inefficient skating stride. To help counter this - athletes at Depth Training frequently perform soft tissue release (foam rolling, soft-ball) and gentle stretching. This is done in combination with strength exercises for the gluteus medius, gluteus maximus and psoas major to help maintain strong efficient hip movements during the skating stride. - Coach Brooks
