Please contact us to set up a virtual appointment at mates@wusa.ca or at wusa.ca/peersupport! MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support) is a one-to-one student peer support program offered by the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association in consultation with Campus Wellness. MATES provides support to students who are hoping to build social skills, or are experiencing personal or aca

demic concerns or low-level mental health and wellness difficulties. MATES volunteers are also well-trained and knowledgeable about various resources on and off campus and can assist students through the navigation of those resources. MATES volunteers are required to go through an interview and selection process and extensive training. Services are available to students from all faculties. Students can access our services whether by referral, personally setting up an appointment, or reaching out to MATES during our drop-in hours. Please note MATES is currently offering Microsoft Teams-based, and Live chat appointments, though both drop-in and booked appointments. Su***de Alertness for Everyone (SAFE) is a half-day, interactive training that teaches four basic steps to recognize when someone may be thinking about su***de and how to connect them with su***de helping resources.

Most people with thoughts of su***de invite help. Often these opportunities are missed, dismissed or avoided—leaving people more alone and at greater risk. safeTALK training prepares you to help by using TALK (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to identify and engage people with thoughts of su***de and to connect them with further help and care.

Students who attend the training will receive a certificate of completion upon completion of the training.
