A high school in Dubuque, Iowa, allows junior and senior students to earn PE credits by helping elderly or disabled community members with yard work. Tasks include mowing lawns, raking leaves, pulling weeds, trimming bushes, and even cleaning gutters or tending chicken coops. The program runs during the final two weeks of the school year, with students working about two hours per day to fulfill their PE requirement.

This initiative, which started around 2019 thanks to teacher Tim Hitzler at the Alternative Learning Center (ALC), is tailored for students who thrive with hands-on, project-based learning rather than traditional gym class. It’s especially meaningful for those considered at-risk or who struggle in conventional classroom environments. Beyond the physical activity, the program cultivates a sense of responsibility, empathy, and connection with the broader community.

Students often report feeling more motivated and engaged, and many continue volunteering beyond graduation. Meanwhile, elderly and disabled residents benefit from both the practical support and the human connection. The program has received widespread praise for blending physical education with service learning in a way that meets educational goals while strengthening community ties. Though it’s not yet a widespread model, it’s a compelling example of what can happen when schools think creatively about education and well-being.

🚧♻️ Incredible innovation from the Czech Republic!

A Czech company is now building highway noise barriers out of old tires — helping fight both noise pollution and tire waste at the same time.

These recycled barriers, called Noba, could help prevent up to 300 million tires from ending up in landfills every year. Not only do they absorb traffic noise effectively, but they also give new life to materials that would otherwise pollute the planet.

Sustainable, smart and scalable. This is the kind of thinking the world needs more of. 🌍👏
