Summer has arrived in the Okanagan Valley and we are well into the Fire season within the five elements in Chinese Medicine. Summer is also known as yáng within yáng, when everything in nature is bursting full of life such as the garden flowers smiling up at the sun, fruits taking form in the orchards, and early summer vegetables being ready for picking! With this expansion of new life, I am re-blooming my newsletter that I started in 2021 and then completely forgot about in the business of running an independent practice. A lot has changed in my practice since then, such as the addition of two community acupuncture locations, and a newsletter is a wonderful way to communicate my offerings, especially as people become more conscious about their social media usage.

✨️Community Acupuncture is coming to Summerland!✨️ It's no secret that I've been loving our community acupuncture evenings at Cedar and Soul Wellness in Penticton, so I am so happy to be offering community acupuncture sessions now at their sister clinic, Essential Balance Healing Collective in Summerland! These sessions will run on the last Sunday of the month from 11:00am-2:00pm. The schedule didn't line up perfectly with prior engagements throughout the summer, so our dates getting started are Sunday July 27th, August 24th, October 5th, November 30th, and December 28th! These are all available online for booking, as are the upcoming Wednesday evenings at Cedar and Soul: July 16th, August 13th, and September 17th! Online booking is available at: https://kylierodger.janeapp.com/

Community Acupuncture treatments take place in an open room along with other individuals also receiving an acupuncture treatment. This style of acupuncture includes less time talking at the start of your treatment and more time relaxing on the table, dropping all those daily tensions. The collective energy of several individuals entering a healing state in the same space is unique to community acupuncture, similar to group meditation.

In my practice, I use a style of acupuncture that involves the palpation of the abdomen and acupuncture channels of the arms and legs to assess how the qì is flowing within the body. This allows one to find areas where the qì isn’t flowing optimally. The body is the guide for treatment and it gives instant feedback after needle insertion so we can assess how things are changing in real time. This system often uses minimal needles which is wonderful for needle sensitive folks, and often patients report dropping into a deeper state with this style.

A few important things to know for your appointment:

✨️ Please come to your appointment wearing loose clothing that can easily be pulled up a few inches above your elbows and knees. Throughout your treatment I will be feeling the acupuncture meridians on your legs and your abdomen; having a loose fitting waistband will have you most comfortable.
✨️ Community acupuncture consists of minimal talking so we do not disturb the fellow acu-nappers in the room. To help minimize talking, please write what you would like to focus on for your treatment within the "reason for booking" textbox and/or on your intake form.
✨️ Please also refrain from wearing any scents to your appointment.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been supporting community acupuncture in the valley! It has been so wonderful to see pre-existing and new patients at these events! If you've got any questions at all, please feel welcome to reach out to me.

In gratitude,
Kylie 🧚‍♀️✨️

Community Acupuncture at Cedar and Soul Wellness in Penticton has officially bloomed, and I could not be more grateful for how our first evening went. I was born and raised in Penticton, and when I moved back to the Okanagan Valley after Chinese Medicine school, there was a magnificent rainbow arching over the lake as we arrived back in the valley between Penticton and Summerland. I knew eventually I would have an offering in that part of the valley where my family has been for generations, and I've been waiting for years for this to come to fruition. I am so grateful to Cedar & Soul Wellness for welcoming me into their beautiful space with such open arms, and so grateful to all of the sweet souls who came to our first evening! Thank you as well to the other Acupuncturists in the area who have reached out to show your support - I am so grateful to work in the valley with such a supportive network of colleagues! The rest of our schedule for the summer is live for booking on my Janeapp (link in bio!)! The dates are Wednesday May 14th, June 18th, July 16th, August 13th, and September 17th. If you've got any questions, feel welcome to send me a message!

07/07/2024

The acupuncture channels (jīngluò 经络) can be viewed as life-sustaining rivers which deliver qì 氣 for the body’s activities and blood (xuè 血) to nourish the tissues. Rivers flow wider and deeper in some areas, become shallower in others, and branch off into smaller capillary-like streams. The flow of a river changes seasonally; during summer it may dry up and cease flowing, in the winter it may freeze and slow, and in the spring the melted snow may fill the riverbed resulting in a more forceful flow. These fluctuations of water flow are like the fluctuations of qì and blood flowing through the acupuncture channels. Sometimes they are abundantly filled, flowing with ease, and other times the channels are depleted, leaving one susceptible to illness, pain, and fatigue. Sometimes these rivers of qì and blood get blocked due to emotional stress, lifestyle habits, physical trauma, or other external factors. These blockages are like twigs, leaves, and rocks falling into a creek, hindering the free-flow of water, and sometimes blocking it altogether resulting in congested flow upstream and depleted flow downstream. In the body this impeded flow of qì and blood results in physical and/or emotional pain. Palpation of the abdomen and acupuncture channels on the arms and legs allows us to assess where the blockages in the free-flow of qì and blood are, and through needling the acupuncture points we can clear these blockages, redirect flow, and replenish flow to these rivers to foster a harmonious state of body and mind.

06/20/2024

Summer solstice, the day of the most hours of daylight and the least hours of darkness, marks the day of utmost yáng and our transition into the Fire season of the five phases. The summer months are characterized by a maturation in nature when everything reaches upward, outward, and blooms in all directions. The flowers and fruits come into full maturation during the heat of summer. Summer is the highest peak of growth when things can reach, expand, blossom, and mature no further, so they bask and celebrate in this time of full expansion. The long daylight hours allow for the earth and all its inhabitants to soak up plenty of light and warmth during the summer days. Heat and light, hot and bright, summer is the embodiment of the Fire phase. Fire rises, flares, grows, expands, and burns brightly. It is a dazzling and exciting display, and the ultimate embodiment of the Fire phase is the sun itself. Everything in life orients itself towards the brilliant, warm, and life-giving sun.

The flaring upward movement is the rising joy felt from being alive when life is bright, expanding, uplifting, and exciting. Fire’s yáng nature makes it transformative and a catalyst that enables things to transform. The movement of life is oriented toward the sun. The discovery of fire allowed for a central source of warmth, light, and ability to cook meals. It was the place that the community gathered for social contact among the community. Still today, a campfire or fireplace in a home is a place of physical heat and warmth in human interactions. Emotionally, the Fire phase corresponds with being joyful, and for the Fire phase, a large aspect of this comes from being with others, connecting with others, and having open-hearted experiences with others. The Fire phase has a flaring upward movement akin to the rising joy felt from being alive when life is bright, expanding, uplifting, and exciting. With sunnier, warmer days in the Okanagan weather forecast, I hope you all find ways to celebrate in this time of yáng through doing the things that bring you joy and having warm-hearted connections with your loved ones.

Happy summer solstice to you all!
Kylie

09/22/2023

The Metal phase is yīn within yáng. Summer’s yáng is waning, and winter’s yīn is growing in strength as the sun is sinking in the west. Metal is the evening and autumn months where summers light fades and the darkness of autumn increases; days are shorter, and nights are growing longer. The movement of the Metal phase is downward and descending due to its heavy nature. The Wood and Fire phases ascended during spring and summer, and now the Metal and Water phases are descending.

The air becomes sharper and colder as the first night frosts approach. The movement is now inward and contracting; plants and trees draw their sap into the stem and down into the roots. Leaves lose their nourishment and fall to the ground with the seeds and nuts which lie in the ground until they sprout with yáng warmth of spring. In the Metal phase there is less noise and activity, more tranquility and calm, but also a sense of melancholy as the bright, joyful, expansiveness of the Fire season wanes. Nothing in nature blooms year round, and this hibernation phase we are approaching, where yáng is stored internally, is vitally important for new growth in spring. This reminds me of chapter 9 of the Dao De Jing:

"Fill your bowl to the brim
and it will spill.
Keep sharpening your knife
and it will blunt.
Chase after money and security
and your heart will never unclench.
Care about people's approval
and you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back.
The only path to serenity."
- Translated by Stephen Mitchell.

If you are feeling the call to retreat, to spend more time alone in quite contemplation, to dig into a good book with a cup of tea, go with it as that is you tuning into the fluctuations of yīn and yáng in the natural world.

In health and happiness,
Kylie

08/31/2023

As the intense heat of summer begins to wane and crops are ready for harvest, we enter the fifth season known as late summer which is dominated by the Earth phase. During this time, nature takes a well-earned rest from producing and heavily lays around in the warm fields, waiting for its ripeness to be harvested. There is an overall feeling of decrease in nature as the intensity of the sun softens, and people know that the outdoor and expansive activities of summer will soon be more focused on withdrawing indoors and inside oneself during autumn. This time of harvest between the Metal and Fire seasons is a time of nourishment, abundance, fullness, and ripeness. It is when there is neither the rising movement of the Fire months, nor the descending movement of the Metal months, making it a period of balance. The Wood spring and Fire summer seasons had an ascending movement as yang within the natural world increased, and now Earth is poised as the pivot between the Fire and Metal months, as now the yang will decline and yin will increase in the Metal and Winter phases.

The Spleen and Stomach, the organs corresponding to the Earth phase, favour warm, cooked, sweet foods such as sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, and chicken. Yellow-orange coloured foods are in abundance during the time of late summer, and are good foods for nourishing the Earth phase. Spices with these colours such as turmeric and ginger are also good for warming the digestive organs. The Earth phase is the center of the cosmological cycle, it is the place from which all directions originate and where all directions meet; it is the axle which the other phases rotate around. As the center, we can support this phase through centering practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and embodiment practices such as breathwork, qigong, or yoga. The Earth is our center, our flesh, so bringing yourself back to the awareness of your body and integrating your mind and body together as a united whole with embodiment practices helps to center someone (acupuncture is good for this too!) Exercise to utilize the muscles, the flesh of the Earth phase, is also beneficial. The Earth loves to stand still but that breeds stagnation, so utilizing the movement of the muscles such as walking, cycling, running, and weightlifting, can all be beneficial for the Earth phase. Any exercises that utilize the abdominal, back, and glute muscles is good for strengthening our physical core. With the state of things in the Okanagan right now, centering practices are vitally important to keep our minds from spiraling.

In health and happiness,
Kylie

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” – Helen Keller

This is how I feel after today's fundraiser. Alone, I could do so little, but together, we raised $950 for the West Kelowna Professional Firefighters Charitable Society Disaster Relief Fund. This charity is raising money to help people in our community and surrounding communities on the Westside who have been affected by the McDougall Creek Fire.

My practice has always felt like a community, and today that community came together for group acupuncture, and my heart grew 100x every time I saw one of my patients walk through the yoga studio doors. Sometimes I feel sad that you don't all know each other, because you are all so beautiful and wonderful, and to me you are a part of my community. Today was so delightful to have several of you together in the same room, co-regulating nervous systems and acu-napping side-by-side. We also welcomed so many lovely faces unfamiliar to myself, and were able to introduce a good handful of you to acupuncture for the very first time! (
