5-4-3-2-1 is a grounding technique that can help to create a sense of calm in the midst of emotional overwhelm, heightened anxiety, and/or overstimulation.

How? This tool infuses the five senses to create present moment awareness: bringing you into the here-and-now.

I hope this is helpful as presence is one of the most precious gifts to experience (& receive) as a parent, partner, kiddo.

Imagine a simple blood test that could detect Postpartum Pepression (PPD) ❗before❗ symptoms take hold. Researchers at Johns Hopkins are making this a reality by identifying biological markers for PPD. This breakthrough could lead to earlier interventions, faster treatments, and better outcomes for mothers/birthing people and their babies.

PPD affects 1 in 5 mothers/birthing people. This innovative approach could be a game-changer, offering hope and support early.

Maternal Su***de Awareness Week. Brings to light... The realities of new motherhood and the increased risk for su***de throughout this vulnerable season.

🩷

Su***de has been identified as a leading cause of maternal death. In fact, research has shown that women who are diagnosed with postpartum depression have an increased risk for su***de lasting up to eighteen years postpartum.

Friends and loved ones often worry that by bringing this topic up - they could increase the risk of su***de. However, research shows the opposite to be true. By asking directly: "Are you having thoughts of su***de?" You actually lower the risk and help to prevent occurrence.

If you are experiencing thoughts of su***de, feel helpless, hopeless, or alone - perhaps as though you're drowning, as if you weren't meant to be a mother, or as though your family would be better off without you?

If someone shares plans to harm themselves, the means to harm themselves, and/or intent to harm themselves?

Please seek immediate mental health support.
Treatment is available. This will pass.

*Dial 988 for Mental Health & Su***de Prevention Support.
*Dial 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

As we step into the second week of September, here is a little reminder from me to you...

While schedules and seasons shift and we support our kiddos/families through (what is often) an emotional transition period, it can be helpful to create mini moments of calm and cheer for ourselves.

🩷 Take a slow breath in/out...
🩷 Say something kind to yourself...
🩷 Hold your heart/notice how this feels...
🩷 Repeat throughout the day by creating cues (ie., before getting out of bed, each time you hop into your car, while folding laundry or washing dishes, before sipping your coffee or responding to emails) or by setting alarms (on your watch, phone, or desktop).

Yes! Fathers (and partners) experience Perinatal Mental Health Disorders. Research shows that at least 1 in 10 dads experience Postpartum Depression. This number increases to 1 in 2 (or a 50% chance) if their partner is experiencing postpartum depression.

Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHDs) include: depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorders, and psychosis (through very rare in men).

Onset can occur from conception, up to twelve months
after the birth of their baby. Occurrence may also follow miscarriage, pregnancy loss, adoption, surrogacy, and infertility experiences.

This post highlights the potential contributors, vulnerabilities, and signs/symptoms connected to Paternal Mental Health Disorders. Wrapping up with treatment recommendations.

Dads & partners deserve support to and through parenthood!

offers free virtual support groups for dads & a monthly 'dad chat' option.
