Okanagan Spellers

Okanagan Spellers Founder of Okanagan Spellers, supporting nonspeaking individuals through Spelling to Communicate. Fully certified S2C Practitioner.

Passionate about helping people build real, meaningful communication, one letter at a time. I grew up in the Okanagan Valley and always knew I wanted to help people. Over the years, I’ve worked in supported living, behaviour intervention, and as an education assistant. Now, I’m training to become a certified S2C Practitioner (expected Jan 2026), and I’m so excited to support nonspeaking individuals

in finding their voice. Outside of work, I love hiking, camping, and yoga. I’ve been married for 20+ years, have one amazing daughter, a golden retriever named June, and a wild cat named Roxy. I’m grateful to do this work in the community I call home.

The ABCs of behaviour help us understand function.

Antecedent. Behaviour. Consequence.

When we look at the pattern, we can start to understand what the behaviour is doing, what need it’s trying to meet.

Behaviour is communication, especially when speech isn’t available or reliable.

Communication barriers are not limited to one diagnosis.

When speech is difficult or inaccessible, alternative communication methods matter.

Access creates independence.

So, why use a letterboard?

1. EVERYONE HAS A VOICE
Whether by speaking, writing, signing, typing, or pointing to communicate, we all have something to say.

2. SYNCHRONY BETWEEN THE BRAIN AND BODY
With practice, motor skills improve, and students can move from concrete to abstract communication.

3. COMMUNICATION IS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO ALL
No one should be left out due to lack of speech.

4. 26 LETTERS MEANS SCCESS TO INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

Communication is a fundamental right and I-ASC is committed to making sure no nonspeaking person is left without access.

Spelling to Communicate (S2C™) empowers nonspeakers to overcome communication barriers posed by traditional oral communication by pointing to letters on a board as an alternative means of communication. This promotes synchrony between cognitive and motor systems and enables spellers to communicate their thoughts and ideas quickly and accurately.

Non-speaking does not mean non-thinking.

Understanding is not measured by speech.

When we presume competence and provide access to communication, we often discover just how much has been there all along.

Health is not just physical, it includes the ability to express yourself, make choices, and be understood.

Access to communication is a health issue.

Everyone deserves a voice, no matter how they access it.

Happy Easter 🌷

To me, this season is about hope, renewal, and the idea that growth often happens quietly before it becomes visible.

In communication work, we see this all the time.

What looks still on the surface can actually be full of learning, understanding, and progress underneath.

Access takes time. Trust takes time. Communication unfolds in its own way.

And when it does, it changes everything.

What people think they’re seeing: “just pointing to letters.”

What’s actually happening: motor planning, regulation, communication, and thought being expressed in real time.

Access changes everything.

Autism is not a lack of understanding, it is often a lack of access to communication.

When we presume competence and provide access to spelling and communication tools, everything changes.

Communication is not optional. It is essential.
