Have you heard of Osteoporosis or Osteopenia?
Osteoporosis and osteopenia (before osteoporosis) cause the bones to become weak and brittle. This is due to a change in the bone-health-cycle where more bone being broken down by the body then being renewed.
This can lead to an increased risk of :
- fractures (especially hip, wrist and spine)
- pain
- a stooped posture
Over 200 million people are diagnosed with osteoporosis globally and it can affect anyone. Women are often more affected due to hormone changes at menopause. People who are on certain medications due to prostate cancer are also at high risk.

What can you do:
-Maintain a healthy weight
-Stop smoking and decrease alcohol
-Good nutrition including calcium and vitamin D
-Physical activity/exercise ---> weight-bearing exercises especially strength, posture, core, and balance focused.

Our physiotherapists are very experienced in helping manage and improve osteoporosis/osteopenia. We work with you to develop evidenced based programmes and supervised progressive exercises that are safe and effective.

We are excited to announce we now have a pessary fitting and maintenance service a Hollyburn Physiotherapy Clinic.

What is a pessary? A pessary is a removable, non-surgical device that is used to support the pelvic organs and tissues in the case of pelvic organ prolapse. They come in many shapes and sizes and can be fit by qualified physiotherapists, nurses and doctors.

What is a pessary used to treat? Pelvic organ prolapse as well as certain types of incontinence.

Who would benefit from a pessary? Those who are struggling with symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse and certain types of incontinence and want to improve their quality of life. There is also some new research that indicate pessaries may not only resolve symptoms and prevent worsening of the prolapse but also improve the severity of it!

Give us a call or visit our website to learn more. Please note, as this is a medical device, an intake assessment is necessary to ensure you are suitable for a pessary fitting.

As many of you know, our administrative staff are second to none. They are friendly, efficient and the backbone of our clinic.

We would like to recognize Denise, our long-time office manager who was instrumental in getting us up and running on Video Appointments, Samantha, who has helped us with our signage and communication and Anita and Keeley who assist at our front desk.
