Evolution has given us a natural disposition to look for the negative to keep us safe from danger...super-helpful if we're being hunted by lions! But we can see some of that natural tendency as no longer helpful in the our current evolutionary context. Fortunately, the brain can be trained to look for positive information too. Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Dr Lisa Astrologo explores how the power of gratitude can help (re)train our brains, and contribute to creating a more balanced view of our world 🩁🙏

Connecte Montreal Psychology's fabulous May Pick is here, from Connecte clinical psychologist Dr Lisa Astrologo! Lisa invites us explore a super helpful resource for trauma survivors, therapists, and indeed anyone seeking effective tools for trauma recovery:
" My pick for May is Dr. Janina Fisher’s workbook called “Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma”. This is a resource I return to often in my work and frequently recommend.
What makes this workbook so impactful is Dr. Fisher’s ability to translate complex concepts into language that feels clear, digestible, and genuinely approachable. It helps people make sense of their symptoms, emotional reactions, and behavioural patterns through a trauma informed lens. Knowledge and understanding of one’s behaviour can be incredibly anchoring in trauma work. When someone can identify and understand why they feel or respond the way that they do, it often reduces shame, increases self-compassion, and builds confidence in their ability to navigate experiences that can be challenging.
In the workbook, this is done by guiding the reader through theory, step-by-step interventions, and worksheets that can easily evolve with an individual regardless of where they are in their process, which is what makes it such a practical resource for both survivors and therapists. " Thanks Lisa! 🙏

Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: A Workbook for Survivors and Therapists by Janina Fisher PESI Publishing & Media, 2020

Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that re-telling the story of what happened would resolve these effects. However, survivors report a different experience: Telling....

'These excerpts from a recent interview with Dr. Chris Irons outline how learning how to relate and care for ourselves in a more compassionate way, understand ourselves and being able to reassure ourselves and compassionately accompany ourselves on our life’s journey are some of the ways therapy can help alleviate our suffering.
Dr. Irons is a founding member of The Compassionate Mind Foundation UK and, along with Elaine Beaumont, has authored books on Compassion Focused Therapy and developed The Self Compassion App.'

How do parenting couples stay connected? Is it reserved for the lucky ones with the easiest babies, or the most babysitters? Although those things can help (!), it is most often couples who keep returning to a few key basics - fondness, shared enjoyment, and feeling seen - that stay connected even as family life gets hectic. Read on as Connecte Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Dr Tobey Mandel shares realistic ways to build that connection, without pretending we have endless time, money, childcare, or energy đŸ«¶đŸŒ±

Check out this month's Pick from Connecte Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Dr K. Danielle Penney, a fantastic resource for parents of adolescents! đŸ«¶

"For this month’s pick, I’d like to share clinical psychologist Dr. Jenny Hwang’s YouTube channel, Project Parent Coaching and Consultation.

Dr. Hwang offers reflections and practical guidance on the common challenges of parenting teens. As she puts it, her goal is to help parents “move from chaos and disconnection into clarity, connection, and confidence.” One video I especially appreciated, The Unspoken Shift at Adolescence, discusses the major developmental changes that occur during adolescence and why tried and trusted parenting strategies may stop working.

Dr. Hwang explores how parents can adjust how they show up for their teens in ways that prioritize connection over correction. I am quick to share her work with clients navigating adolescence, having found her content personally relevant as I navigate these years, too!"

Parenting changes the moment your child becomes a teenager — but most parents don’t realize how much. What used to work — reasoning, reminders, even calm exp...
