If I pay to have my shoulders replaced privately, will the surgical list in the public system get shorter?
No.
In fact the list in the public system may get longer.
There is a FINITE number of physicians, OR nurses, anaesthesiologists etc. There are not enough HSWs to run 2 systems.
Did you know that there are ORs not being scheduled/used in the public system?
Surgeons want OR time to work and shorten their lists.
If HCWs are working in the private system then they are not available to work in the public system.
If I pay ($40,000/shoulder), those of you on the list waiting for joint replacement will end up waiting longer.
Jumping the surgical cue is not sustainable for our healthcare system.
I have been on the surgical list now for almost 2 years and will wait my turn.
My decision is not really that noble as I am using the wait time to rehab the shoulders.
If my rehab goes well, I may opt out of surgery!
That's a win/win in my books!
