"This is *quite a statement* from former UCP MLA Peter Guthrie on the state of education and teacher bargaining in Alberta. Guthrie is a conservative to the marrow of his bones, and this is a good reminder that conservatives haven't always been as antagonistic to education as Danielle Smith and her government has proven to be. This is not a partisan issue, in other words. The current government is uniquely and troublingly opposed to public education and display a particular contempt for teachers in a way that old school conservatives - Lougheed, Getty, Stelmach, and even Klein - would never do. It's sad, but it's a good reminder that it didn't used to be this way, and it doesn't have to be like this now. It's a choice, and it's a terrible one for our students and our schools."

We are the richest prov in Canada and this UCP govt spends the LEAST amount of all the provinces per student on education.
