I love research! I love research being performed in Canada. And I especially love seeing grant funding to SMS, a rare disease that effect someone I love.

The Smith-Magenis Syndrome Research Foundation is excited to share some incredible news! McGill University–supported Professor Dr. Wei-Hsiang Huang has just received a $1,025,100 five-year grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to continue his groundbreaking SMS research. This project will investigate the molecular pathogenesis of Smith-Magenis syndrome and advance therapeutic approaches using hiPSC-derived neuronal models. Importantly, some of the preliminary data that made this grant possible were generated thanks to support from the SMSRF. Dr. Huang noted how vital the SMSRF grant has been in positioning his lab to secure this major Canadian award. Dr. Huang estimates the annual cost of his research at approximately $500,000, making this funding a critical step forward. This success is not only a testament to his dedication but also to the collective strength of the SMS community and its donors, who help fuel research that moves the science forward. This grant is a true beacon of hope for the SMS community. Please join us in celebrating Dr. Huang’s remarkable achievement—and in recognizing how your support of SMSRF plays a direct role in making milestones like this possible!

Let’s celebrate Physiotherapy Month!

May is National Physiotherapy month in Canada!

In the month of May each year, we celebrate our physical therapy community by raising awareness about the profession and how physical therapists help Canadians recover and improve their mobility!

As North America’s only free-standing rehabilitation faculty, we are proud to keep people of all ages moving and active in their daily lives through outstanding academic programs, exceptional faculty and innovative research through the Department of Physical Therapy.

This month, join us in celebrating National Physical Therapy month by learning about the educators, researchers and students who are shaping the future of physical therapy.

Last week in Whistler we had a sold out menopause discussion with 225 amazing people from the Sea to Sky Corridor. People want more information on how to improve their health and their life during this time. Pelvic floor physio is a part of this process.

Why should you see a pelvic floor physio?

- you have been pregnant beyond 13 weeks
- you have delivered a baby va**nally or by caesarean
- you are p*eing more than 8 times per day
- you wake at night to p*e
- you can’t wait at least 15 minutes to get to the toilet
- you leak. Ever. For any reason.
- you are constipated or have IBS, or have had issues with this in the past
- you have sexual pain or discomfort
- you have irritation to the v***a during sport or activity
- you have a feeling of heaviness or bulging in the va**na
- tampons or menstrual cups will not stay in or leak
- on-going low back, hip, or pelvic pain
- you have had a history of any gynaecological concerns, including surgeries or procedures
- you have had a hysterectomy
- you have had abdominal, pelvic, or back surgery
- you have/had breast/chest cancer
- you have menstrual pain that stops you from activity or work
- you tuck, bind, have had gender affirming surgery or are thinking about it
- you have not had any of the above concerns but would like to see how functional your pelvic floor is and what you can do to maintain strength and decrease risk of symptoms as you move towards menopause and general aging.
