The Ontario Gov't recently added $250 million towards funded IVF cycles to help ensure that women in need, have shorter wait times for funding. This is a massive boon to women in Ontario needing IVF. For the past few years, wait times have been as long as 2 to 3 years depending on the clinic! This was not acceptable as even a few years, can be the difference between having a baby or not, particularly in women over the age of 37. With the cost of each unfunded IVF cycle sometimes exceeding $20,000 this carries a huge financial burden to many young people dealing with infertility. The funding for one cycle is a huge help.
Please consider Acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to your IVF cycles. Done in a timely manner, Acupuncture can help to balance hormones, alleviate stress and help the body utilize the medications more efficiently. Many extended health benefits cover the cost of treatments to a good extent. At Inner Zen, I have 24 years experience working with countless women undergoing fertility treatments of all kinds and I would be pleased to help you on your journey to motherhood

I want to offer a sincere apology to anyone who tried to reach out to me over the past few months. On June 29th I fell and severely fractured my right arm in 3 places and my ability to practice was significantly diminished. After much physiotherapy and taking time to heal, I am once again able to work at full capacity and welcome women in need of treatment to reach out to me

How the Vagus Nerve and Stress Affect Fertility—and How Acupuncture Can Help

When it comes to fertility, most people focus on hormones, ovulation, or egg quality. But there’s a powerful player that often gets overlooked: the vagus nerve. This essential part of the nervous system deeply influences your stress levels, hormonal balance, and reproductive health.

In this post, we’ll explore the vagus nerve’s role in fertility, how chronic stress can interfere with conception, and how acupuncture can support both the nervous system and reproductive function.

---

🌿 What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, connecting the brainstem to nearly every major organ—lungs, heart, digestive tract, and reproductive organs. It acts as the main communication channel in your parasympathetic nervous system—the system responsible for rest, digestion, healing, and reproduction.

A well-functioning vagus nerve promotes:

Calm and emotional regulation

Healthy digestion and nutrient absorption

Optimal hormone production

Lower inflammation throughout the body

---

😟 How Stress Affects Fertility

Chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, your fight-or-flight response. This leads to prolonged release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can interfere with fertility by:

Disrupting ovulation

Suppressing progesterone production

Reducing uterine blood flow

Negatively impacting thyroid and digestive function

Increasing systemic inflammation

In short, if your body perceives stress as a threat, it may deprioritize conception in favor of survival.

---

💓 The Vagus Nerve–Fertility Connection

High vagal tone (a measure of vagus nerve health) is linked to:

Reduced cortisol levels

Lower inflammation

Better hormone regulation

Improved heart rate variability (HRV)

Faster recovery from physical or emotional stress

When your vagus nerve is working well, your body feels safe—which is a prerequisite for healthy ovulation, embryo implantation, and early pregnancy development.

---

🧘‍♀️ How Acupuncture Supports the Vagus Nerve

Acupuncture is one of the few therapies that directly stimulates the vagus nerve and promotes a parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) response. Here’s how it helps:

✔ Nervous System Regulation

Points like Yin Tang, Shen Men, and auricular acupuncture (ear points) calm the mind and regulate the stress response.

✔ Hormone Balance

Acupuncture modulates the HPA axis, helping to regulate cortisol, FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone.

✔ Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs

By improving circulation to the uterus and ovaries, acupuncture enhances the uterine lining and supports follicular development.

✔ Gut-Brain Health

The vagus nerve also connects to the digestive system. Supporting it through acupuncture can relieve bloating, IBS symptoms, and gut inflammation—issues that may interfere with fertility.
