Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health

Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health Founded in 2009, Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health was created to raise funds, and support.

The Foundation aims to bring awareness to, and supports innovative programs that include: care, research, education, mental health promotion, the reduction of mental health stigmas, and the building and renewal of facilities and grounds. Together we can share that help is available and a brighter future is possible. This time of year can feel especially heavy. As the days grow shorter and the darkness lingers, many people find their mental health more difficult to manage, particularly those living with depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), often called seasonal depression, affects thousands of Canadians each year during the winter months. While it accounts for nearly 10% of all reported cases of depression in Canada, 2–3% of Canadians will experience clinically significant SAD at some point in their lives.

Behind each statistic is a person, someone doing their best to get through the day. Even when the days feel dark, it’s important to remember that brighter moments are ahead. At Ontario Shores, hope is always on the horizon.

With your support, hope can become healing for individuals and families facing serious mental health challenges.đź’™

Eating disorders don’t fit a stereotype, and they’re not always visible. They are complex mental illnesses that can affect anyone, often in silence. This Eating Disorders Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the importance of timely support, understanding, and compassionate care.

Megan’s eating disorder began as a way to prove herself and earn love. With the right support, including recovery-focused care at Ontario Shores, she began to see that life was worth living and recovery was possible.

At Ontario Shores, individuals receive recovery-focused treatment that supports both physical and mental well-being.

Your generosity helps make stories like Megan’s possible. Donate today to support life-changing mental health care and give others the chance to begin their own journey toward healing. 💙

Your mental health matters. Always.

Today, you are reminded to pause and take care of yourself. Whether it’s stepping outside for a short walk, enjoying a quiet moment with a book, or setting aside time for self-care, even small acts can make a big difference.

Just a few minutes can help support your mental well-being. As the new year unfolds, let’s continue to show ourselves the same care, understanding, and compassion we extend to others.

Today, we’re taking a moment to shine a light on our Recovery High School and the vital support from Bell Let's Talk that helps make this program possible.

In collaboration with the Durham District School Board, our dedicated clinicians and youth advisors, the first Recovery High School in North America offers a safe, understanding space for students facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use challenges. By blending traditional classroom learning with recovery-focused activities and therapeutic support, students are given something incredibly powerful: the opportunity to keep learning, keep healing, and keep moving forward.

For many youth, mental health challenges can make staying in school feel overwhelming or even impossible. This program ensures they don’t have to choose between their education and their well-being. Because every student deserves the chance to succeed, feel supported, and believe in their future.

Our Story

Founded in 2009, Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health was created to raise funds, and support for Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores). Our goal is to also help bring awareness to, and reduce the stigma, surrounding mental illness. Throughout the years, our team, events, and fundraising programs have grown and evolved substantially. Together, we work with the numerous departments at Ontario Shores to lead change so that individuals with mental illness have access to the care they need, and the opportunity to fully participate in an inclusive and stigma-free society. Creating a sense of hope is one of the greatest gifts we can give to those living with complex mental health challenges. Our mission at Ontario Shores Foundation is to help create that hope through the combined efforts of our team, and the generous support of our donors and community. Together we are helping our patients to recover, and giving them that feeling of hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Everything we do is rooted in the principles of Discovery, Recovery, and Hope: Discovery. With a dedicated focus on research and innovation, you can help us continue to lead the way in the development of new advances for the treatment of mental illness.
