Did you know, tongue scalloping on the sides of the tongue are a strong clinical indicator of obstructive breathing during sleep?
Tongue scalloping is a result of low tongue tone and posture. It often reflects poor palatal development and constricted tongue space.
Research suggests in a pool of people with tongue scalloping:
• 89% have severe collapses of the airway lasting ten seconds or more.
• 89% have reductions in oxygenation during the night.
Tongue scalloping can be treated with myofunctional therapy by retraining the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to improve tongue position and function. Myofunctional therapy uses a series of exercises to correct improper habits like incorrect swallowing and tongue resting posture, which can resolve the issue and prevent future problems such as clenching, TMJ pain, or sleep apnea.
