📣Registration is open for the 2026 Entry to School program!
Lindsay and Port Hope families, ACT Learning Centre and Spark Pediatric Services have partnered to bring you the ETS program.

The Entry to School Program was created to help autistic children prepare for a successful transition to kindergarten or Grade 1. This
is achieved through supporting skill development in six main areas within a group-based, half-day program implemented by a
multidisciplinary team.

To register, check your AccessOAP account for an invitation, then visit https://entrytoschool.actlearningcentre.ca/contact-us/

💭What are fine motor skills? Fine motor skills involve the coordination of small muscles in the hands, fingers, and wrists, working in sync with the eyes to perform precise movements.

The brain processes visual input and sends signals to the muscles to carry out the necessary movements, strengthening the connection between the eyes and hands. Over time, as children (and adults) practice and refine their fine motor skills, they gain better control over these small movements.

Swipe right ➡️to find out some benefits of building fine motor skills and a list of some of our therapist’s favourite activities to help build on these skills!

It's spooky season! Halloween is a magical time for kids of all ages, we at SPARK want to share a few tips to prep for an inclusive and fun Halloween, for all families! 🎃🦇

👻 Plan Ahead: Prepare your child for what to expect on Halloween night. Talk about costumes, trick-or-treating, staying safe and any potential sensory experiences.

👻Sensory-Friendly Costumes: Choose costumes that are comfortable and sensory-friendly. Opt for soft fabrics, tagless clothing, and consider letting your child participate in costume selection.

👻Offer Choices: Let your child have a say in the Halloween activities they participate in, and respect their preferences. After all, Halloween is all about having fun!

👻 Create a Visual Schedule: Use a visual schedule or social story to help your child understand the sequence of Halloween activities and change of typical routine.

👻Trick-or-Treat Together: Accompany your child while trick-or-treating. Your presence can provide comfort and support, especially if your child has social or sensory challenges.

👻Celebrate at Your Own Pace: Remember, it's okay to celebrate Halloween in your own unique way. It's about making cherished memories, not conforming to anyone else's standards!

Have you ever wondered why sensory play is so important? Sensory play engages multiple senses such as touch, sight, hearing, smell, and sometimes taste. It helps stimulate senses in a controlled and enjoyable manner. Here are several reasons why we at SPARK think sensory play is great!

👉 Cognitive Development: When children manipulate and interact with various materials, they learn cause-and-effect relationships, develop spatial awareness, and enhance their ability to classify, sort, and compare objects based on their attributes.

👉 Language and Communication: It provides opportunities for children to express themselves verbally and non-verbally. As they explore different textures, shapes, and sounds, they can describe their experiences, share their observations, and communicate their preferences.

👉 Fine Motor Skills: Sensory play often involves physical manipulation of materials, such as pouring, squeezing, grasping, and stacking. These activities help develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity. For example, playing with sand or playdough can improve finger strength and coordination, which are essential for tasks like writing.

👉 Emotional Regulation: Engaging with sensory materials can be soothing, reduce stress, and provide a sense of comfort. It allows children to explore and express different emotions, helping them develop emotional intelligence and coping strategies.

👉 Creativity and Imagination: By manipulating materials and experimenting with different combinations, children can create unique experiences and outcomes. This fosters imaginative thinking, innovation, and the development of divergent thought processes.

Smart Start is a small group-based therapy program based out of our Oshawa Learning Centre. It is delivered by occupational therapy and speech language therapy professionals, and is best suited for children ages 3 to 6 (with or without a diagnosis). Its school readiness and early learning focus makes this program a great fit for children who need help developing skills needed to be independent and successful at school.
