Say hello to Tetiana Lutsenko, one of our student members and recent winner of the 2023 CCMTS/Massage Addict Research awards!
Tetiana and her fellow students achieved first and second place for two papers on:
โข The Effects of Massage Therapy on Blood Pressure
โข The Effects of Massage Therapy on Sleep Quality
While Tetiana enjoyed conducting each study, she found the study on blood pressure provided more consistent results.
"We measured blood pressure for one week prior to massage therapy treatment to have a baseline," she shared. "We used a married couple who was the same age and had consistent daily routines and living environments."
Tetiana and the team measured blood pressure each morning and night, as well as at different points before and after treatment to find differences between each individual.
While they did not find that day-to-day blood pressure changed significantly, they found interesting results in each subject's blood pressure and pulse after treatment:
โข Both subjects' blood pressure increased after they got off the table, an important finding for treating people with blood pressure problems.
โข Male subject had a noticeable decrease in systolic pressure and an increase in pulse.
โข Female subject showed a decrease in pulse.
"I would really like to conduct the same research on a bigger scale and in a more controlled environment," Tetiana says.
Tetiana is a student from Western College of Remedial Massage and currently working at Cathedral Sport Massage in Regina, SK, where she has loved working with their team.
"My main interest so far is injury assessment/rehabilitation, but I am looking forward to the continuing education programs. I am also interested in learning prenatal massage, working with clients with cerebral palsy and many more."
When asked why she chose the NHPC, Tetiana shared: "After attending presentations from each association that took place at our school last year, I decided to join NHPC. The main reason is NHPC recognizes more modalities and provides extensive support for their members."
Thanks, Tetiana! We can't wait to see what you do next in our amazing industry.
