🌱 Practice #1: Stillness (mindfulness made easy!)

If you find yourself saying ‘there aren’t enough hours in the day’, or you’ve tried mindfulness and meditation but you get bored and restless so you think it’s just not your thing - this one’s for you!

Stillness can be physically uncomfortable when our brains and bodies are used to staying in motion - the Newton’s law of nervous systems! 🙃 Instead of diving into a guided meditation, meet your system where it’s at: Start with just noticing your feet underneath you for 3 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, whatever feels comfortable and easy. Notice what parts touch the floor, where all 10 toes are, if you put more pressure in the balls or heels of your feet…You just practiced mindfulness! 🥳

Try it for a little longer, or maybe try noticing a different body part tomorrow. Build it slowly and notice how stillness becomes a little less uncomfortable. How it creates a little more space in your mind, your body, and your day.

Nervous system regulation seems to be a hot topic these days but dysregulation can be a totally normal response to things that are unexpected, upsetting or overwhelming. Don't let the algorithms fool you into thinking you should feel 'regulated', 'calm' or 'chill' ALL the time!

Let it be fun and easy! What can you hear that you’ve never noticed before? 👂✨😌

Most of the cells that are required to produce feelings of happiness, calm, focus, motivation and regulate overall mood (among many, many other roles!) are located in our gut. If our gut is unhappy, our brain receives signals that WE are unhappy (or anxious, scattered, fatigued, depressed, etc, etc…). Eating well to feel well is not a hot take — but what if we thought about foods as mood-setters or energy-givers and takers? What if chose the foods we consume based on how we felt emotionally after eating them? Would your choices differ?

Eating and meal times can be a hot topic for many of us, and for so, SO many reasons. Being mindful of what comes up as we connect to our food (and our consumption of food) can help us start strengthening our relationships with ourselves, our planet and even our communities.

Start small, give yourself grace, and let it be easy. 🤍

Mindfulness can be a hugely beneficial practice for both body and mind. Key word being 'practice' -- it takes repetition and patience, just like any other skill. 😉

Most studies are based on practicing 20 minutes a day for at least two consecutive weeks. Research requires strict parameters, real life doesn't. Start with a few minutes, most days of the week and see what you think!

There’s a reason new year’s resolutions are notorious for falling by the wayside within the first few weeks of the year…and it’s not because we just need to try harder, or want it more! The dead of winter just isn’t the time to make big changes, start new things or set lofty goals. If you look around, nature is dormant and conserving its energy to grow and bloom again in the spring. And we are part of nature.

This is your invitation to change it up this year and try something that aligns with the season.

'A world so still you swear you can hear her breathe. Snow glitters with points of light flung like stars across a universe of white. Not even birds breach the air, and there rises within you the notion that stillness is more enriching than motion, listening is more empowering than distraction and slow, measured steps feel more graceful than speed. Ah, I’m growing old, you say — then marvel at how young and new and invigorated it makes you feel.' - Richard Wagamese
