Osteopathy focuses on stimulating the bodies physiology to heal and adapt.

With pain and injury we need to do more than just rest. Through treatment and properly dosed exercise we can harness our bodies ability to heal and build resilience.

We are so much more then a set of parts like a machine.

✔️INTRODUCTIONS:
It’s been a long time since I have written about myself so here is a little bit about me:

➕My name is Gerard and I am a registered massage therapist and in the final months of my 5 year program in Osteopathy.
➕I moved to Whitehorse a year and a half ago from Canmore, and we are building a house here.
➕ I coach the Whitehorse Youth Climbing team.
➕I was an elite Cross Country ski racer and have raced on the World Cup Circuit.
➕I love the outdoors and am an avid Climber, Backcountry skier, Mountain Biker and trail runner.
➕I decided to study Osteopathy after working with an Osteopath for my own chronic back injury that occured while I was ski racing.
➕ I work with a broad range of clients ranging from chronic and acute pain, performance athletes and everything in between.

❓Does your persistent pain stop you from doing what you love?

➕So often when I speak with new clients they tell me they have stopped running, skiing, gardening... because of persistent pain. Often their goal is to get rid of the pain first and then return to activity.

❌The problems with this are:
- Often with this model the pain doesn't go away.
- They have given up something that brings them happiness.
- The longer someone is away from an activity, the harder it becomes to get back into it.

✔️What if by gradually reintroducing the activities you love in a controlled way you can cultivate an environment for your body to heal, and for your pain to calm down?

➕If you are unsure where to start or if it is safe or not to start reintroducing activities, book online for a assessment. LINK IN BIO

PREVENTION

✔️We often get injured when we ask a little too much from our body at a given moment in time.To prevent injury we need to focus on changing the balance of what our bodies can tolerate with the stress / ask we put on our body. This is where training, rest, nutrition and supportive measures come into play.

✔️Where does Osteopathic treatment fit in?
➕By addressing postural imbalances and biomechanics we can ensure that your body is able to adapt to the physical activities you do.
➕Ensuring nerve and blood supply throughout our bodies allows our bodies to function at its optimum. This is a core principle of Osteopathy.
➕Focusing on Systems. Checking in to see how your body's systems are working and how they are interacting with one another. The holistic view of how your musculoskeletal, nervous, vascular, hormonal and digestive systems connect is what makes Osteopathy unique.
➕Increasing tolerance of specific body tissues through strengthening exercises.
➕Addressing Energy, and stress levels . When our energy is low, or we are chronically stressed, our focus and balance becomes worse. Often this is when injuries occur.

✔️✔️By having check ins throughout the year, whether currently injured or not Osteopathy can help ensure we are able to get the most out of our bodies.

❓Do you struggle with overuse injuries? Try the tips bellow to decrease your likelihood of injury.

✔️Practice a Variety of activities: Often we get injured not because we are doing too much overall, but because we are doing too much of one thing.

✔️Strength Training: Studies repeatedly show that a consistent strength training routine makes your body more robust and decreases the risk of injury.

✔️Ease into it: whether it’s the change of seasons, or a return after time away from an activity, be patient! Don’t expect to be able to handle the same volume or intensity as before right away.

✔️Recovery: Focus on sleep, nutrition, and taking rest days.

✔️The Body has incredible healing capabilities. My job as a practitioner is not to heal, but to support and stimulate the patient’s body to use its physiology to heal itself.

✔️When you come see me in the clinic I am not healing you with my hands. By using manual therapy and exercise prescription, I am stimulating your body's physiology to heal itself as efficiently as possible.

➕If you are struggling with injury or pain, book online for an assessment and treatment.

✔️EARLY INTERVENTION

🎁Recently I suffered a bad ankle sprain. While not the Christmas gift I was hoping for, it has been a good reminder of the importance of early intervention for acute injuries.

➕My experience with this injury has brought to mind the importance of client education. The evening I sprained my ankle I went for an X-Ray as I was concerned about a fracture. Once the fracture was ruled out, there was not much time for the Doctor to discuss rehabilitation due to the emergency room setting. I was given the advice “of rest and use when tolerated.” While good advice, I was left thinking that for the average patient that was not enough information to move forward and rehab their injury as best as possible.

➕I am fortunate to know the best practices in rehab, what to expect, how to assess for complications, and have some great colleagues to get manual treatment from. In my case, in under three weeks I am easing back into sport and have no pain at work or with my daily living.

✔️✔️All this to say: after injury, it is important to get an assessment and treatment early from a trusted therapist and make sure you leave that first session with clear expectations, and goals for moving forward.
