We are so excited to be offering this service in the near future to eligible patients!

Please note: an appointment is still required in order to get the swab and requisition

From CBC News:

Good news for those who dislike getting pap smears – cervical cancer self-screening will become available in the Yukon through some health care providers as soon as next week.

Pap smears, or cervical exams, are most often used to screen for human paploma virus or HPV. The virus causes 99 per cent of cervical cancers, said Dr. Sarah Saunders, a Whitehorse-based obstetrician and gynecologist.

Usually, pap smears are performed at a clinic by a doctor or health-care provider, but with the new kits, patients will have the option of collecting their own sample on site, or taking a kit home, and bringing it back at their convenience for testing.
Saunders said self-administered swabbing helps reduce barriers for patients who may have had negative experiences in the past such as painful pelvic exams or traumatic sexual experiences.

"There's a whole list of reasons why people might have felt uncomfortable getting a pelvic exam in the past, and so being able to do this self swab eliminates that step at the outset, to hopefully take away that barrier to screening," she said.

Saunders said results are usually available within six weeks. She said some health care providers only follow up if a test is positive in order to decrease administrative burden. Saunders recommends patients confirm with their provider if they want a follow-up call for a negative result.

This is excellent news for anyone who finds it uncomfortable or triggering to get a pap smear -- something common for survivors of sexualized assault, as well as for many others, for a whole host of reasons. You can find the article, posted on March 18th, on CBC North.

We want to take a moment to clarify a few things that are circulating online

📞 Phones & callbacks

Our phone lines are monitored Monday–Friday. Our number one priority is always the patients and practitioners in front of us, Second is answering the phones — which is why we have a voicemail.

Voicemails are usually returned within a few hours. If we’re unable to return a call the same day, it will be returned the following business day. Occasionally, there may be a slightly longer delay if one of us is sick or away

•We return calls once to the number left and leave a generic voicemail asking you to call back. After we call you back, we won’t chase you- it’s up to you call us back again if you miss our call.

• Please speak clearly and leave your phone number in your message

• Repeated calls without leaving a voicemail do not result in a callback

**We have noticed an increase in calls with no one on the other end, so we have also asked IT to look into our phone and voicemail system to make sure everything is working properly and that messages are coming through as they should.**

📅 Appointments & booking

We are not a drop-in clinic. All visits are by appointment only.

Current booking times can be as short as 2–3 weeks, depending on the reason for your visit. Some appointments need to be booked with specific nurse practitioners, which can mean longer waits for more specialized care.

As a standard, appointments are booked Mondays and Tuesdays only. We do sometimes have availability on other days, but this is not consistent and cannot be guaranteed.

We are also working hard to stay within our scope of sexual health–related care. Appointments seeking care outside of this scope will not be booked. We’re happy to send you in the right direction though!

We genuinely care about our patients and work hard to go above and beyond. Seeing things posted that don’t reflect who we are or how we operate is honestly heartbreaking, especially for a team that puts so much into this work.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued trust as we continue to support our community.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for helping keep information accurate.
