I want to talk about biophilia: The Greeks (of course) coined the term philia, meaning “love of”. So biophilia means a “love of life or living things”. Humans have an innate connection to and love of nature. I feel this - when I am in nature, I’m like, yes, I’m home! I feel and absorb the energy Mother Nature shares.
Right about now my boys would say, “mom, you’re sounding a little hippie.”
So of course researchers have found nature-based walking interventions (nature therapy) can increase feelings of mental well-being, generally feeling more positive - and yes, you feel more connected to nature.
I also want to talk about biophobia - this is concerning! Biophobia is when people are disconnected and feel negative towards nature. Can you believe this is a thing??!! Evidence suggests biophobia is really becoming more and more of a thing especially in urbanized and developed areas. This has a huge impact on mental and physical well-being.
Get yourself some nature! Studies show even looking at nature (a photo, out a window) can enhance our mental well-being.
