👓 A Clear Look at the History of Glasses!

From ancient magnifying crystals to today’s smart glasses, eyewear has evolved for over a thousand years:

🔍 Ancient Times: Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used glass globes and stones to magnify text.

👓 1200s Italy: The first eyeglasses appeared—simple convex lenses for reading.

🔧 1400s–1700s: Printing fueled demand; temples were added; Franklin invented bifocals.

🌍 1800s–1900s: Mass production made glasses common, and lenses became more precise.

đŸ§Ș Today: Think plastic, photochromic, blue-light, and even smart glasses!

✹ Fun Fact: “Spectacles” comes from Latin spectare — “to look.”

Halloween Safety

Costume Safety: Make sure masks do not obstruct vision and use care with any pointy objects that are part of a costume.

Makeup: When using makeup near the eyes, make sure it's approved for that purpose and do not share eyeliners, mascara or makeup brushes.

Be Seen: Make sure children have reflective tape or stickers on their costumes or Halloween bags when they are out trick or treating. Flashlights and wearable LED also help increase visibility.

October routines mean more screen time for kids and adults alike. Whether it’s online classes, work deadlines, or cozy Netflix nights, too much screen time can leave your eyes feeling fatigued. Avoid the headaches (literally!) by making simple adjustments to your habits.

Meet Sonia!

Sonia joined Williams Lake Optometry in January 2024. Born and raised in Williams Lake, she’s thrilled to now be giving back to the community by helping care for their eye health.

After graduating from Williams Lake Secondary in 2017, Sonia moved to Vancouver for her studies. She returned home in 2019, where she later met her fiancé, Munraj.

At the clinic, you’ll often find Sonia performing preliminary testing before your eye exam or assisting at the front desk—answering calls and helping patients with a smile.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, running, and spending time with her beautiful (and goofy!) Golden Retriever, Lola.

Sonia is especially looking forward to 2026, as she plans for her Sikh wedding — and we couldn’t be more excited for her!

October is Blindness Awareness Month

This month, we’re shining a light on the importance of preventive eye care and early detection of eye diseases. Many serious eye conditions can develop without noticeable symptoms—and if left untreated, may lead to preventable vision loss or impairment.

Health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and infections can all have a significant impact on your vision. Regular eye exams are key to catching problems early and protecting your sight.

Take a proactive step—schedule your eye exam today. Your future self will thank you!

3. Don't forget the turkey, a great source of zinc and B-vitamin.

4. Enjoy the pie just for fun!
