Kitchari. Khichdi. Known by many different names but always the same result- a cozy, nourishing, simple meal that your digestion will THANK you for, promise.
Kitchari is a staple in an Ayurvedic household- it’s usually eaten at least once a week to reset and replenish your digestive system. Sometimes, when a cleanse is in order (like the Springtime for instance) a 5-day kitchari cleanse can be just the thing to rest and reset the body, without feeling hungry or deprived (btw, if anything makes you feel deprived, full stop now.)
We usually make one pot a week and have it two meals in a row. If you start them young your kids won’t mind it and I truly believe their little bodies start to crave it.
Soak your rice and split lentils for at least a couple hours, or overnight is even better. You can use any grain and split legume combination, just make sure to soak first and vary cook times.
You can put any veggies you want just make sure they cook well so digestion is easy.
While I don’t have an exact recipe, the one pictured is a “Spring time Kitchari”. You can google for exact recipe amounts if you need..
Basmati rice
Split red lentils
Turmeric
Ginger
Garlic
Your favourite curry powder
Coconut milk
Salt
Black pepper
Mustard seed
Spring peas
Spinach
Cook until all grains and veg are WELL cooked. Eat warm to aid digestion.
Thank us later 😉
