Greetings, Windsor/Essex!
Many having been asking about my absence from the clinic, so it's time to break the radio silence! Buckle up for a short story.
On March 21st my wife became ill with flu-like symptoms. This was roughly 1 week after it was announced that schools would be temporarily closed. We were all aware of the imminent threat of COVID-19, but there were very few cases in Essex County at that time. Her symptoms progressed from a cough and fever to severe headache, malaise and weakness. Thankfully, she did not experience any shortness of breath. Her illness lasted 17 days. She had a confirmed case of COVID-19 without any recent travel or contact with a known carrier.
On April 4th I started coughing. I had been taking care of my wife and children for about 2 weeks at that time. We were quarantined as a family with my wife completely isolated from the children. Thankfully, my wife improved substantially as I become more ill. My cough progressed to a severe headache, fever, and eventually shortness of breath. The severity of my case was considerably less than my wife's, however, the shortness of breath was concerning. I would become winded after speaking for 5 minutes. I also tested positive for COVID-19.
We are both now asymptomatic and recovered. My wife has tested negative twice, however, my most recent test came back with an inconclusive/intermediate result. I have since been swabbed again and await my results.
Once I have a negative result I will plan my return to clinic. Although we are still in a state of emergency my services are considered essential for those who are truly suffering or "emergent". Thankfully, Sozan and Dr. Synnott have been holding down the fort with excellence.
I have a lot to be thankful for. My children, 6 and 8 years old, have not demonstrated any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 after being locked in their home with their sick parents for 4 weeks. Our friends and family have been unbelievably supportive as well. Many groceries and meals have been dropped off on our porch this past month. I want to thank everyone for their love and support. It has meant a lot.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone to listen to the scientists, epidemiologists, virologists, infectious disease specialists, and immunologists. Practice social/physical distancing, wash your hands, don't touch your face, and wear PPE (if you have the means to) while out in public until things improve. COVID-19 is not your typical upper respiratory tract infection.
Much love,
Andrew/Andy
