Music therapists across Canada are raising their voices.

We’re calling on provincial governments to formally recognize Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) as healthcare professionals by adding them to the Canada Revenue Agency’s Authorized Medical Practitioners list.

Why does this matter?

Because recognition means clients and families could claim music therapy as a medical expense, improving access to care.

Join us as we advocate for change.

Follow along and

With appreciation to the Canadian Association of Music Therapists for their ongoing national advocacy and leadership in advancing recognition for Certified Music Therapists across Canada

Fun Fact Friday!

🎶 Benefits of a Goodbye Song

1. Closure & Emotional Containment
A goodbye song provides a clear ending, which is essential for:
Clients who struggle with abrupt transitions
Reducing dysregulation at departure
Supporting attachment boundaries

2. Processing & Reflection
Lyrics can incorporate:
“What was your favorite part?”
“We played the drum today!”
This reinforces memory and learning.

3. Transition Back to Environment
It signals that therapy is ending and prepares clients to return to:
Classroom
Home
Residential setting

4. Reduces Anxiety Around Endings
Predictable endings reduce distress and behavioral challenges during dismissal.

5. Builds Routine & Consistency
Routine supports neurological organization — a core concept in structured approaches like Neurologic Music Therapy.

💡 Clinical Goals Hello/Goodbye Songs Can Target
Increase initiation of verbal greeting
Improve sustained attention
Increase peer awareness
Improve impulse control (waiting for name turn)
Enhance emotional identification
Support regulation through tempo/dynamic control

📌 Why They’re So Powerful

Music activates multiple brain regions simultaneously (motor, language, emotional, executive), so even a simple greeting song becomes a multi-system intervention rather than just a “cute routine.

Fun Fact Friday!

🎵 Benefits of a Hello Song

1. Predictability & Emotional Safety
A consistent opening song creates structure. Clients know what to expect, which reduces anxiety and supports emotional regulation — especially for individuals with autism, developmental delays, trauma histories, or anxiety disorders.

2. Transition Support
It helps clients shift from their previous environment into the therapeutic space. Music acts as a cue that therapy has begun.

3. Social Engagement
Name inclusion, eye contact prompts, and turn-taking within the song encourage:

Joint attention
Social reciprocity
Peer awareness

4. Communication Practice
Opportunities for:
Verbal responses (“Hello, Candice!”)
AAC device use
Gestures, waving, clapping
Vocal imitation

5. Orientation & Cognitive Priming
Including lyrics like the day of the week, weather, or location supports:
Orientation to time/place
Executive functioning
Attention skills

6. Emotional Check-In
You can build in prompts such as:
“How are you feeling today?”
Using dynamic shifts (soft/loud) to match energy levels
