First responders are often the first ones there on someone’s worst day. They step into situations most people never have to experience again and again. And over time, that exposure adds up.

In Canada, research shows that about 44.5% of public safety personnel screen positive for at least one mental health disorder, including anxiety, depression or PTSD. That’s significantly higher than rates in the general population.

Within that, around 23% screen positive for PTSD alone. For comparison, about 8% of adults in Canada report moderate to severe PTSD symptoms.

This is the reality of repeated exposure to trauma and the need for real, accessible support. At CMHA, we see how critical it is to support the people who support all of us. That means reducing stigma and making space for honest conversations about mental health.

Today, on First Responders Day, we’re recognizing the impact first responders have in our communities and the importance of making sure support is there for them, too.
