Today on International Day of the Midwife, we recognize midwives as essential, front-line health workers. They play a vital role in improving pregnancy care and supporting families across Nova Scotia. We need to expand access to midwifery services so more people can get the support they need.

Happy International Day of the Midwife!

Content warning: Colonial and gender-based violence.

Today, on , CMHA-WECB honours the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S). The trauma of these losses continues to impact the mental health and well-being of Indigenous communities across generations.

At CMHA-WECB, we stand in solidarity and are committed to advancing culturally safe and accessible mental health supports, guided by Indigenous communities. 🧡

Bill S-228, currently in its third reading, would criminalize forced and coerced sterilization. The crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people exists along the same continuum of violence.

👉🏽 Responsibility to act lies with colonial institutions.

Today, we honour those lost, those harmed, and those fighting to restore safety to our sisters and our communities. We call on all levels of government to fully implement the 231 MMIWG Calls for Justice and on the Canadian government to pass Bill S-228.

“Sterilization without consent does not occur in isolation. It is enabled by the conditions that shape women's health and constrain meaningful consent.

This bill is an important step toward establishing a clear legal response, but criminalizing does not eliminate the system that produces the harm. Like the umbilical cord teaching, we need to shift the burden of responsibility to those with the capacity to act.”
– Dr. Jennifer Leason, March 24th 2026 INAN Committee hearing on Bill S-228

"If Ottawa is serious about building a more accessible, sustainable, and resilient health-care system, it cannot afford to overlook midwifery any longer."

In an op-ed published in The Hill Times for International Day of the Midwife, CJ Blennerhassett highlights midwifery as a proven, cost-effective model that expands access, supports the health workforce, advances equity, and strengthens Canada’s health-care system for all.
