We call on our networks across Ontario to acknowledge the 50*h year of Prisoners’ Justice Day
(PJD) on August 10*h, 2025. 2025 marks 50 years of solidarity and organizing for action both
within and outside of prisons across Ontario. This anniversary comes at a time when legislation, both provincial and nationally, is fast-tracking the criminalization of communities we work with, through the Community Care and Recovery Act, the Safer Municipalities Act, the Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act, and the Strong Borders Act.
PJD offers a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about and take action against the over-incarceration of Black, Brown, Asian, Indigenous, Trans, 2-Spirit, and Non-Binary people.
Other critical issues raised on PJD include the criminalization of HIV, the correlated risk of incarceration and rates of HIV/HCV, and the increased risk of health disparities and death for those living with HIV/HCV in prison. With the addition of the aforementioned laws and their negative implications for people who face disproportionate risk related to HIV, this year’s recognition of PJ is especially important.
With these realities in mind, we call on our networks across Ontario to show solidarity by participating in PJD events, ongoing advocacy, and by using the resources mentioned in the post. Together, we can strengthen our work to bring justice and health equity to communities across Ontario.

August 1st is Emancipation Day. This day acknowledges Canada’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the end of slavery across the British Empire when the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect on August 1st, 1834. In commemorating this day, we also acknowledge that systemic anti-Black racism did not end in Canada with the implementation of this Act; rather, it left a legacy of racist practices and ideologies that continue to persist today.

WHAI recognizes Canada’s history of anti-Black racism and its ongoing influence on the disproportionate impacts of HIV and adverse health outcomes for Black communities, particularly for Black women and gender diverse people. In our work, WHAI will continue to commit to rupturing systems that uphold and perpetuate white supremacy and to be active and intentional co-conspirators in the fight against anti-Black racism.

This quote is pulled from a longer poem written by Anna Marie Sweller, titled ‘Washing the World.’ Sweller is a Mi’gmaq, Anishinaabe and Polish poet, born in Fredericton. This Indigenous People’s Day, we take time to deepen our knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities in Ontario, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. In Ontario, Indigenous people make up 3% of the population, yet Indigenous women account for 7.2% of new HIV diagnoses amongst women overall. In women’s prisons, Indigenous women make up 50% of those who are imprisoned. These disparities are examples of the many ways that colonialism, and its impacts are still prevalent today. It is all of our responsibilities to understand the Calls to Action and Calls to Justice in the Truth and Reconciliation Report and Reclaiming Power and Place reports. Today, and throughout the year, let’s work together to deepen our understanding of the historical and current realities of colonialism and actively work to create change.

Juneteenth (a portmanteau for June 19th) is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States when the last group of people enslaved in the U.S. were informed of their freedom, nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth dates back to 1866, and has been celebrated every year, typically through prayer, family gatherings, educational events, and festivals of food, music and dancing. As WHAI joins in celebration for this day, we acknowledge that anti-Black racism still persists in our communities and institutions creating barriers that impact Black communities’ health outcomes. WHAI commits itself to addressing these barriers as they impact ACB women’s risk to HIV and other negative health outcomes, as well as celebrating the contributions and resilience of ACB women, as our work would not be possible without them.
