What is the DUTCH test?!
📈 I often get asked if I run the “DUTCH test” and what it tells us
🟡 The DUTCH test stands for “Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones”
It tests the urine to look at our hormones as well as the METABOLITES of our hormones (specifically cortisol, estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, melatonin and potentially others)
Urine is collected over a 24 hour period and sent to the lab
📉 The DUTCH test allows us to look at patterns of our hormones and metabolites rather than just a snapshot (as seen in blood work and salivary hormones)
💰 However, it is a very expensive test and for many women, a serum or salivary hormone test (along with symptoms) is enough for us to determine what’s going on
It usually isn’t my first resort in practice because there are more cost effective ways to determine what is going on, however can be useful if we have exhausted other options!
