You cannot control the anxious thoughts when they show up, but you can control what you do in response to them.

Imagine thoughts as passengers on a bus. They get on and off as they please. Some of the passengers will try and cause mayhem by trying to convince you to take a detour… but you don’t have to listen to them or follow their directions.

YOU are in the driver’s seat. Stay on course!

🎣 WHAT’S GOT YOU HOOKED?

Imagine trying to move forward in your life, be the person you want to be, act in line with your values, but you keep getting stuck. Instead doing the things you want to do, you find yourself behaving in ways that go against your values and goals. You know it’s not effective but it just keeps happening!

Sometimes we get “hooked” by difficult situations, feelings, and thoughts. They monopolize our attention, reel us in, pull us off track, and jerk us around:

▪️We become FUSED with our thoughts:

1️⃣ We respond to these thoughts in problematic ways. We say and do things that are ineffective in building the life we want.
- thought: “I don’t look good in this outfit” and then cancel going to a social event you have been looking forward to
- thought: “this is too hard, I can’t do this, I’ll never be good enough” and then quit

2️⃣ Our thoughts dominate our attention and awareness in problematic ways. We cannot pay attention effectively to what is happening in the present moment.
- you become caught up in worrying and keep making mistakes at work
- you are constantly thinking about a mistake you made in the past and aren’t present with your family

▪️We do things to AVOID the difficult thoughts and feelings:
- you feel anxious so you endlessly scroll on [social media of choice]
- you feel sad so you eat more than we wanted to of that tub of ice cream
- you have a hard time controlling your anger and are fearful of losing control or hurting others, so you suppress your anger or withdrawal from relationships

THE LIST IS ENDLESS

✨ Your thoughts and feelings are not the problem. The way you respond to your thoughts and feelings is what matters. Ask yourself: “what’s got me hooked?!”

THE GOOD NEWS: You can learn to OPEN UP and ACCEPT difficult thoughts, feelings, etc (they are part of life) and act in ways that are effective in building the life you want in the LONG TERM. Thoughts and feelings may still be painful and difficult, but they won’t have such a negative impact on the quality of your life. Less struggle…more living 👊🏼
