Colorectal Cancer Screening

Men and women between the ages of 50 to 74 should get screened for colorectal cancer with a F***l Occult Blood Test (FOBT) every two years. Men and women over 75 should continue to get regular check-ups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for colorectal cancer. If a first degree relative (parent, sibling or child) had colorectal cancer you are at increased risk. Talk to your doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer when you are 10 years younger than your relative was at the disease onset. Breast Cancer Screening

Women 50 – 74 years of age should get regular breast cancer screening with mammography every two years. Women 75 and over should continue to get regular checkups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for breast cancer. Women between the ages of 30 and 69 and identified by a physician as high risk for breast cancer, should have yearly screening using both a mammogram and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Cervical Cancer Screening

All women who have ever had any s*xual skin-to-skin contact need to have regular Pap tests starting at age 21. This includes in*******se, intimate touching or oral s*xual contact with partners of either s*x. The current recommendation in Ontario is a Pap test every three years. Make the Pap test part of your regular health checkup until you are 70 years old. Pap tests can stop at age 70 if you have had three or more normal tests in the past 10 years. If you have had a hysterectomy, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner to see if you still need a Pap test.

Real support. Real impact.

At the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, our STOP Program is making a difference in the lives of patients who choose to quit smoking—even after a cancer diagnosis.

Since launching the program in October 2024:
✔️ 101 patients have enrolled in smoking cessation support
✔️ Our WeCare Pharmacists have delivered 203 smoking cessation counselling visits to individuals enrolled in STOP
✔️ 78.3% of patients received free Ni****ne Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help them quit

Quitting smoking is one of the most powerful things patients can do to improve treatment outcomes and overall recovery.
Through every conversation, patch, and moment of encouragement, our team is walking alongside patients to support long-term health and healing.

March is Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month.

This month, the Erie St. Clair Regional Cancer Program recognizes individuals in our region living with multiple myeloma, along with their families, friends, and care partners. While there is no routine screening test for multiple myeloma, early detection can occur through blood tests, urine tests, and imaging that may be ordered when symptoms are present or through monitoring for those at higher risk.

We remain committed to raising awareness, supporting timely diagnosis, and providing compassionate, high-quality cancer care for communities across the Erie St. Clair region.

During Social Work Week, we recognize the incredible impact of our Cancer Program Social Work Team.

Social workers are an important part of the cancer care team, providing emotional support, counselling, practical assistance, and connections to community resources for patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.

If you or a loved one could benefit from additional support, talk to your care team about a referral to a social worker. You don’t have to navigate cancer alone — help is here. Ask your care team about a referral today!
