Colorectal Cancer Screening

Men and women between the ages of 50 to 74 should get screened for colorectal cancer with a F***l Occult Blood Test (FOBT) every two years. Men and women over 75 should continue to get regular check-ups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for colorectal cancer. If a first degree relative (parent, sibling or child) had colorectal cancer you are at increased risk. Talk to your doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer when you are 10 years younger than your relative was at the disease onset. Breast Cancer Screening

Women 50 – 74 years of age should get regular breast cancer screening with mammography every two years. Women 75 and over should continue to get regular checkups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for breast cancer. Women between the ages of 30 and 69 and identified by a physician as high risk for breast cancer, should have yearly screening using both a mammogram and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Cervical Cancer Screening

All women who have ever had any s*xual skin-to-skin contact need to have regular Pap tests starting at age 21. This includes in*******se, intimate touching or oral s*xual contact with partners of either s*x. The current recommendation in Ontario is a Pap test every three years. Make the Pap test part of your regular health checkup until you are 70 years old. Pap tests can stop at age 70 if you have had three or more normal tests in the past 10 years. If you have had a hysterectomy, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner to see if you still need a Pap test.

September is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about childhood cancer, supporting children and families affected by the disease, and promoting research, funding, and support for improved outcomes.

The color gold is often associated with childhood cancer awareness, and many organizations encourage people to “Shine Gold” during September to show their support. Show your support by wearing gold this month and encourage others to do the same!

This September, we want to shine a light on the risks and symptoms associated with different groups of blood cancer during Blood Cancer, Leukemia, and Lymphoma Awareness Month.

There are 3 main groups of blood cancers – leukemia, lymphoma (such as Hodgkin lymphoma and non Hodgkin lymphoma) and myeloma (also called multiple myeloma).

Swipe to learn about the different risk factors and symptoms associated with each of these groups of blood cancer.

For more information on the different groups of blood cancers including risk factors, symptoms, and how you get diagnosed, visit https://cancer.ca/en/cancer-information/cancer-types and search for each type of cancer listed above.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to focus on raising awareness about ovarian cancer, its symptoms, and the importance of early detection.

When ovarian cancer is found and treated early, the chances of successful treatment are better. Get regular health checkups and see your Primary Care Provider if you have any symptoms or are worried about your health.

If you have a higher than average risk, you may need to visit your doctor more often to check for ovarian cancer. Talk to your Primary Care Provider about tests that can help find ovarian cancer early, including the following:
-A pelvic exam
-A transvaginal ultrasound
-A cancer antigen 125 (CA125) test
