Celebrating Fatherhood, Community, and Connection! 🤍

This Father’s Day, our Social Skills kids had a memorable experience at the Fantastic Fathers event at Sportsplex St. Clair!

We weren’t just there to celebrate the incredible dads in our community, our students also took on a meaningful challenge by selling locally produced popcorn from What’s Poppin’ Popcorn Factory, and they sold close to 200 bags! 🍿

This was more than just a sales activity, it was a learning opportunity. Our students experienced the full journey: from the disappointment of hearing “no” to the thrill of a “yes.” A few of them even stepped outside their comfort zones, bravely approaching people to ask if they’d like to buy popcorn. And when someone said yes, oh boy, was it worth the effort!

We didn’t just sell popcorn, we sold it for a cause. All proceeds go directly to Fantastic Fathers, supporting their mission to create more opportunities for families to come together and make lasting memories. 🙌

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out, supported, and made this day truly special.

We had an incredible time at the Second Annual Walk and Activity Day at St. Clair College’s Sports Park! 💙☀️

It was so special to connect with families, community members, and fellow service providers, all coming together to raise awareness for autism and support the amazing Bruce Awad Program.

The weather was perfect, the energy was high, and we loved seeing the kids light up as they joined in on all the fun activities! 💫

🍝 Diner’s Club outing with our amazing Social Skills group!🍽️

Last weekend, we visited Mezzo, a local Italian restaurant, where the kids practiced ordering food, using their best manners, meeting the chefs, and engaging in great conversations — all while having tons of fun! 💬✨

We love watching our clients build confidence and independence through real-life experiences like this.

🌟 Terminology Tuesday: First-Then Strategy 🌟

🧠 What is the First-Then Strategy?
Also known as the Premack Principle, this simple yet effective strategy uses a preferred activity to motivate completing a less preferred task. 💡

📚 How it Works:
First do something necessary,
Then enjoy something fun or rewarding! 🎉

🎯 Examples:
“First clean up your toys, then you can paint!”
“First finish your homework, then you can play outside!”

💡 Why it’s Great for Parents:
This strategy helps children understand that completing tasks leads to positive outcomes. It’s a win-win for motivation and cooperation! 🙌

✨ Pro Tip:
Keep it simple and consistent. Make sure the “then” activity is something your child loves—it’s the key to success!

We had an amazing field trip at Boss Bagel on Erie Street today! 🥯✨

We took a few kids from TLC to learn how bagels are made – from measuring ingredients and mixing the dough to rolling, boiling, and baking. They even got to decorate their own bagels with cheese and sesame! 🌾🧀 The kids loved it and got to take some bagels home too! 🏡💛

Huge thanks to the Boss Bagel team for hosting us and sharing this fun experience! 🙌💛

🌟 Terminology Tuesday: Shaping 🌟

🧠 What is Shaping?
Shaping is a powerful teaching technique where small steps toward a desired skill are reinforced. Over time, these small steps build up to the final goal! 🌟

📚 Example in Action:
A child learning to wash their hands might start with being praised for turning on the tap. Gradually, we encourage closer approximations, like wetting their hands, applying soap, and eventually completing the entire process of washing and drying their hands independently! 🧼💧

💡 Why It’s Important:
Shaping helps make learning achievable and fun! 🎉 It celebrates progress at every step, building confidence and motivation to keep going.

✨ Parent Tip:
Break big goals into smaller steps and celebrate each success along the way. Your encouragement helps pave the path to growth! 🌈

🌟 The ABCs of ABA: Understanding Behavior One Step at a Time! 🌟

In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we use the ABC model to understand and address behavior.

💡 Why is this important?
By analyzing these three components, we can:
✅ Identify patterns and triggers.
✅ Teach new skills to replace unwanted behaviors.
✅ Create positive outcomes that encourage appropriate actions.

📊 Using ABCs as a Data Collection Method
1. The ABC model isn’t just for analysis-it’s a great way to collect data too!
2. Documenting the antecedent, behavior, and consequence helps us track recurring patterns.
3. Over time, this data shows us what’s working (or not) and helps us make informed decisions.

💬 Why Collect ABC Data?
1. It provides a clear picture of why behaviors occur.
2. Helps us create strategies that are evidence-based and tailored to the individual.

The ABCs of ABA are a foundational tool for understanding, addressing, and improving behavior. By collecting and analyzing ABC data, we can uncover the “why” behind actions and work towards meaningful progress!

🌟 Terminology Tuesday: Functional Communication Training (FCT) 🌟

🧠 What is FCT?
Functional Communication Training (FCT) is all about empowering individuals with safe, effective, and functional ways to communicate their needs and wants 💬✨

💡 Why it’s Important:
FCT gives individuals a voice, helps reduce frustration, and empowers them to express themselves in safe and effective ways 🗣️

✨ Parent Tip:
Observe your child’s behaviors and ask, “What are they trying to tell me?”. Help them find a more functional way to communicate that need by providing them the language and reinforcement!

🌟 Co-Regulation: Fostering Calm & Connection Between Caregivers & Children 🌟

Co-regulation doesn’t stand alone as a skill—it thrives within a warm, responsive relationship where caregivers provide structure, set limits, and offer consistent routines.

When children experience big emotions, your co-regulation response may vary depending on the child and circumstances. However, the core steps remain the same:

🔵 Regulate:
✨ Pause and self-regulate first. Take a deep breath to calm your own emotions.
✨ Understand their needs: Emotional signals reflect the size of their need—whether it’s safety, growth, or learning.
✨ Accept strong and unpleasant emotions: Show empathy by saying, “I’m here for you. We’ll get through this together.”
✨ Give time to process: Be patient and loving, demonstrating self-restraint in your reactions.

🟢 Relate:
✨ Calm and secure presence: Use a soothing tone, gentle facial expressions, and open posture.
✨ Show frustration tolerance: Your steady presence models resilience and provides a sense of safety.

🟡 Reason/Support:
✨ Speak at their level: Use simple and familiar language.
✨ Validate their feelings: Name and accept their emotion by saying, “You’re disappointed, it makes sense to feel that way.”
✨ Provide the least intrusive support: Offer encouragement, do tasks together, or provide gentle guidance.

💡 Co-regulation is more than just calming your child in the moment—it’s about teaching them lifelong self-regulation skills through connection and support.

💛 Remember: The connection you build during these moments fosters emotional growth, resilience, and trust. Your calm is their calm.
