If you see someone in distress at an outdoor festival or sporting event this summer, there’s a chance it’s heatstroke.

Someone with heat stroke may have flushed skin, a rapid heart rate and a high body temperature. Other signs and symptoms of heatstroke can include confusion, a headache and nausea and vomiting.

If you think someone may be on the verge of heatstroke, here’s how to cool them down fast:

 Get them into the shade or indoors
 Remove excess clothing
 Put them in a cool shower, use the spray from a garden hose, or apply cool wet towels to their head, neck and armpits.

Talk to our pharmacist if you have any questions.

Did you know that SPF stands for sun protection factor? SPF relates to the amount of time it takes for your skin to burn without any protection. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends using a product with an SPF of 30 or more daily to protect your skin.

During the hot, hazy days of summer, it’s important to pay attention to your body’s hydration needs. If you’re spending a lot of time outside, or you and your children are playing sports, and sweating heavily, you could be at risk of dehydration.
The signs of dehydration can include:
• Thirst
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Flushed skin
If you or someone you are with is showing signs of dehydration, get some liquids in right away. An electrolyte-infused water will help to replenish your body with depleted nutrients. Certain medications can increase your risk of dehydration. Ask our pharmacist for more information.

The warm weather is returning and with it those pesky mosquitoes—and their bites. But don’t worry, you can get some relief!

For some of the most effective ways to reduce the itch and inflammation that often results from a mosquito bite, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine and/or applying a topical option, like calamine lotion, after-bite gel, or hydrocortisone cream.

Stop by and speak with our pharmacist if you have questions about using these products, or if you think a bite that you’ve been scratching might be infected.

Are spring showers triggering your migraines? You’re not alone. As many as one in three people with chronic migraines say that weather changes affect their symptoms.

For some people, weather changes can cause imbalances in brain chemicals like serotonin, that can bring on a migraine. Changes in barometric pressure and windy or stormy weather can also be triggers.

Read this blog post on how to cope when weather changes trigger your migraines:

For many, spring weather can exacerbate asthma symptoms. Pollen is a common trigger, but did you know that asthma symptoms can also be triggered by temperature changes, insect repellants and yard fertilizers?

Now is a great time to check the expiry date of your inhalers—or if you can’t find them, call the pharmacy to request a refill.
