Is posture really the main cause of your pain🧐?

How many times have you been told to “sit up tall and don’t round your shoulders”, or “shoulders back…”?

A common myth is that your dysfunction is being caused by your posture. One’s “rounded shoulder” posture could be seen as “poor” yet cause no dysfunction, meanwhile the same “rounded shoulder” posture could be witnessed in a person with dysfunction.

They key takeaways is that no particular posture is inherently bad for you however, staying in a particular posture for a sustained amount of time can be!! The body and it’s joints function off length-tension relationships, and staying in a particular posture for a sustained amount of time could lead to shortening of one muscle group and lengthening of another which alters optimal length-tension relationships in the body!

Muscles are in a weakened position when they are chronically lengthened or chronically tight and inflexible. And it’s often this imbalance that causes dysfunction.

So next time your chilling on the couch with your shoulder slouched and back rounded just remember it’s not the end of the world! Just remember to get up and move a little in between episodes or more so throughout the day if you’re working at a desk etc! So what’s you’re next posture gonna be?💪🏽🧠

Who are Athletic Therapists? 🤔
Athletic Therapists are individuals who specialize in the Assessment, Rehabilitation, Prevention, Reconditioning, & Emergency Care of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries (muscles, bones, joints, ligaments etc).
Assessment🧠- Assessment relates to the systematic approach & process we use in order to determine dysfunction. From a subjective patient history, to objective testing (postural, gait analysis, active range of motion, passive range of motion, isometric resisted range of motion, special testing, palpation) our assessment leads us eventually to our course of action…. “REHABILITATION”
Rehabilitation🦵🏼- Rehabilitation is the process in which we incorporate therapeutic modalities & therapeutic exercise to promote bodily healing and eventually return you back to the activities you love doing! Rehabilitation can have many stages marked by certain signs and symptoms however, it’s our job to interpret those signs and symptoms and incorporate the proper treatment that promotes the healing process whether that be via manual therapy, therapeutic modalities, or tensile loading via strengthening exercises.
Prevention💪🏽- Prevention relates to the proactive approach we take in rehabilitation & reconditioning in order to better prepare you for the physical demands of your returning task whether that be a Midfielder playing 90 mins a game, a Health Care Aid that needs to transport patients from a wheel chair to a bed, or a weekend warrior that like to play hide and seek with their little ones!
Reconditioning🏃🏽‍♂️- Reconditioning relates to how we work with patients in order to return them back to their pre-injury level of fitness in terms of both musculoskeletal & cardio respiratory health/fitness.
Emergency Care🚨- Emergency care is best related to our on-field presence however, it can still be very useful in clinical situations. Every Athletic Therapist is required to maintain a valid First Responders Certification as well as a BLS & First Aid Certification. From weather-related illnesses, musculoskeletal injuries, to medical related emergencies…AT’s are on standby in the occurrence of an event!

Hello Folks👋🏻!
Most of you know me but for those that don’t, my name is Jordan and I’m a Certified Athletic Therapist and recent graduate from The University of Winnipeg!
Throughout my degree I’ve had the privilege of working with both high level performance athletes from a variety of sports like soccer, rugby, hockey, and football as well as industrial athletes going about their daily job and tasks!
It’s pretty tough to narrow down why I wanted to become an Athletic Therapist, but I would assume my interest in the human body/anatomy, love for sports, and inner desire to help people achieve their goals had much to do with it! Although I sustained minimal traumatic injuries throughout my sporting career, I was always amazed to see my injured teammates make a timely return and was always keen on the process it took to return them back to playing!
My approach to rehabilitation is Patient-Centred, Therapist-Facilitated! Meaning I prefer to tailor my rehabilitation around the person I am treating in order to make it individualized and customized rather than treating everyone with a standard “protocol”.
One common misconception is that Athletic Therapists only treat Athletes. Although you may see Athletic Therapists on major sport teams as first responders and trainers, we have a large presence in the private sector (clinic) where we work with industrial athletes, WCB, MPI, and private patients.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury to run your next marathon, compete in your next competition, or just stay in shape to keep up with little ones over the weekend… Athletic Therapy is for you! With all that being said, just remember.. you don’t have to be a PRO to GO👊🏻!
