Is posture really the main cause of your pain🧐?
How many times have you been told to “sit up tall and don’t round your shoulders”, or “shoulders back…”?
A common myth is that your dysfunction is being caused by your posture. One’s “rounded shoulder” posture could be seen as “poor” yet cause no dysfunction, meanwhile the same “rounded shoulder” posture could be witnessed in a person with dysfunction.
They key takeaways is that no particular posture is inherently bad for you however, staying in a particular posture for a sustained amount of time can be!! The body and it’s joints function off length-tension relationships, and staying in a particular posture for a sustained amount of time could lead to shortening of one muscle group and lengthening of another which alters optimal length-tension relationships in the body!
Muscles are in a weakened position when they are chronically lengthened or chronically tight and inflexible. And it’s often this imbalance that causes dysfunction.
So next time your chilling on the couch with your shoulder slouched and back rounded just remember it’s not the end of the world! Just remember to get up and move a little in between episodes or more so throughout the day if you’re working at a desk etc! So what’s you’re next posture gonna be?💪🏽🧠
