Manitoba is eliminating sick notes! Government officials confirmed today that legislation will eliminate sick notes for any absences of 7 consecutive days or less. This will be the strongest standard in Canada. With over 600,000 sick notes requested per year in Manitoba, eliminating them will free up doctors to see more patients. This is good for patients, good for doctors, and good for Manitoba.

Thank you to the Manitoba government for listening to physicians and moving this forward.

Eliminating sick notes in Manitoba would free up over 300,000 patient appointments per year. That’s like adding 50 more doctors overnight, which couldn’t be more important considering Manitoba has the biggest shortage of family doctors in the country.

More than a third of the time, patients no longer have any symptoms left when they see a doctor, which means sick notes aren’t a very effective way to verify absences. There are better ways to monitor and manage absences from work or school that don’t waste limited health care resources.

82% of workers would rather go to work sick than get a sick note, which means taking their germs to work and sharing them with co-workers. When workers are forced to get a sick note but don’t need medical care, it means taking their germs to a clinic when they don’t need to.

Some patients’ only option is to visit an ER to get a sick note, and that only adds to our ER wait times which are among the longest in Canada. That's one reason why Doctors Manitoba and the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians recommend getting rid of sick notes.
