Being told your baby’s latch ‘needs’ to look a certain way can be unhelpful and confusing.

This includes being told they need to have the whole of your ar**la in their mouth.

Because a baby tends to latch asymmetrically to a breast it’s actually very likely that you may see more ar**la at the top of your breast, rather than at the bottom.

But even then no one has ever fed your baby with your breast before so we don’t know for sure how it’s going to look. How it feels is more helpful!

Hope this is reassuring.

If you’ve ever had mastitis (or are just want to be prepared in case it happens), check out this informative post and excellent visual from • .nutrition :

We were once taught to use a vi****or on our breasts, and hard pressure to help “push the clog out” ❌☠️

But clogged ducts are INFLAMMATION of the milk ducts…there’s no “clog” to get out

🚫so we don’t want to cause more inflammation by being rough with our breasts

✅We want to be GENTLE with our breasts! You might feel like you’re not even doing anything with such light pressure, but you are!

✅Then when you gentlyyyy add in some breast gymnastics (gentlyyyy moving your breasts around) while simultaneously doing gentle strokes, that’s where the true magic happens ✨

You’re working with your lymphatic system to reduce inflammation and this can help so much with engorgement, clogged ducts and even mastitis.

if you want my full mastitis protocol which is a mixture of the current Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine protocol plus my nutrition recommendations comment “mastitis sucks” or check out my highlight “Mastitis/clogs”

and if you want customized breastfeeding support and even preventing issues in the future, my team would love to help you virtually!

Now I want you to grab a food scale and tell me how many grams you’ve been using of pressure on your breasts 😅 (shout out to for this analogy at her lactation conference)

Your milk supply works a lot like an ice machine, and a tiny whey protein called FIL helps control the process. But what exactly is FIL?

FIL stands for Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation.

FIL’s job is to regulate milk production based on how full or empty the breast is.

When the breast is very full, FIL signals the body to slow down milk production.

When milk is regularly removed and the breast is less full, FIL signals the body to make more milk.
In other words, milk production runs on a supply and demand system.

More milk removed → more milk made.
Less milk removed → less milk made.

It might feel a little counterintuitive at first, but the idea is simple: if milk isn’t being removed, the body assumes it isn’t needed.

That’s why regular breastfeeding or pumping helps keep milk production going strong.
