Does your back feel tired after sitting or standing for a long period of time? Do you feel like you are stretching or exercising and it just isn’t helping?

Although I have an active job, I still need to maintain posture while seated, standing, and when I’m in static positions while working with my clients.

In this photo I am performing an exercise to strengthen my postural muscles. It’s something that I include in my workouts because it’s just as important as squats and shoulder presses for me.

If you’re feeling like what you’re currently doing isn’t helping, let’s chat about what we can adjust or change!

Note: this isn’t necessarily the exercise that you need, rehab and exercise looks different for everyone! 👍🏼

These are 3 things I keep in mind to combat exercise anxiety:

1. Keep it simple. - exercise doesn’t need to be complicated.
2. Make it fun. - do something outdoors, change up the routine.
3. Not every workout needs to be exhausting. - some workouts are harder and some are more of a breeze, and that’s okay! Moving my body is sometimes the most important goal no matter what kind of movement.

Have you experienced exercise anxiety? How do you overcome yours? I would love to know in the comments!

Neck pain is a pain in the neck, figuratively and literally.

Now think of the many things you can do to alleviate that pain.

Heat, yes, stretch, yes, try a different pillow, yes. But what about, movement, position, habits, your shoulder, your back?

Let’s consider more than just feeling good momentarily and look at this from all angles. Let’s create a plan, and set some goals to get you back to the activities you love, just in time for spring.

Over the years, I have been really active, and sometimes not as active. I’ve incorporated different techniques to help with pain. I’ve also noticed a big difference when I’m more active, and when I’m working on improving my strength.

If you’re feeling like you’ve been around the world trying to figure out why your body isn’t happy, or you’re frustrated with your progress.. have you ever had your strength tested?

A one on one appointment with me means a thorough assessment. One that includes your quality of movement and your strength.

When I ask my patients if they are stretching, I often get 1 of 2 responses:

1. Yes.
2. No.

I’m here to say that both of those answers are okay. Why? Because if you don’t have the knowledge that I have, I don’t expect you to be a professional stretcher.

There are more than 600 muscles in your body - which ones are you supposed stretch?

Whether or not you already stretch - my assessment is going to tell us what your body needs and we’re going to either create a plan for you to start, or adjust your current routine to fit your goals.

Double tap if you’re #1 or #2!

I took the Mulligan Concept Course for the upper body last weekend (after waiting a year and a half of postponing - thanks Covid). The Mulligan Concept is to assist the joint in moving from a better starting point.

It’s a manual therapy technique that I’m looking forward to using. Thanks Brittany for being a great partner!

Simple Neck Stretch - with a lot of us at home for work, it’s important to stretch and relieve tension.
..

Sit down with tall posture. Using a long towel, sit on one end of the towel and pull the other end firmly over the shoulder of the side you are stretching. Using the towel over the shoulder helps stabilize the shoulder when performing this stretch.
..

Gently bring the ear on the other side towards your shoulder just until you feel a stretch in the opposite side of your neck.
..

Remember a stretch should not be painful.
..

Hold for 30 seconds and alternate sides for rest.
..

You can perform this stretch every day.
..

If you have a pain, ache, or injury, you can see me on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
..

Did you know that Athletic Therapists are also First Responders? They are trained to recognize when emergency medical responders are needed and to manage an athlete or casualty until the Paramedics arrive.
..

This week I attended a recertification course for Sport First Responder which I do every 3 years. It’s more tailored for first responders in an athletic setting and addresses safe equipment removal for athletes with minor to severe and traumatic athletic injuries.
..

It also gives us the skills and training to not just respond to the athletes but also sport officials and spectators, as well as the general public.
..

It's time to start doing you.
..

I do it, you might do it, I'm sure there are many people that do it.
..

Comparing myself to someone else's fitness and physical activity accomplishments is something I do. It's seriously so unhealthy and we all need to stop and start doing things for ourselves.
..

Be proud of your own fitness accomplishments and goals and do it your way at your own pace.
..

What works for someone else doesn't necessarily work for you and that's completely normal!
..

High intensity, low intensity, spin class, pilates, yoga.. whatever! Movement is movement.
..

Find and not what moves someone else.

If you're not up for some walking, resistance training, or whatever it is that you're doing to move your body, then I suggest stretching!
..

If you don't have a regular, or irregular routine to move your body, then I suggest stretching!
..

Stretching is the easiest way to relieve tension in your muscles without having to go anywhere, or buy any tools or pay anyone. If you have 4 walls and a floor then you can perform almost all stretches safely and effectively.
..

Make sure to breathe continuously but normally during all of your stretches. A stretch should never be painful so if it is, simply reduce how far you're going. As long as you're feeling the stretch, you are creating changes in the tension.
..

The Figure 4 Stretch is one that I prescribe to a lot of my clients and is great for stretching out the hip. Place your ankle to the opposite knee. Use the side not being stretched to help bring the stretching side toward your chest. You can also gently push away on the knee of the side you are stretching.
..

Hold for 3x30 seconds, alternating sides for rest.
..

If you are having any trouble with this stretch, DM or check out my website for online booking to see me and we'll address why this can be.

There are many reasons that keep me going back to work in the clinic. ..

One reason is right here...

Connecting with my patients...

There is something so special about being able to get to know each and every one of my patients and providing one on one time and attention to them...

Because an injury does not define you and there are more layers underneath that sprained ankle...

Because there really is something about care and compassion that can enhance healing...

And honestly, everyone has something really interesting to say about life.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends that adults aged 18-64 years get 150 minutes of physical activity per week in minimum 10 minute increments...

The activity can range from moderate to vigorous (intense) intensity...

They also recommend resistance exercises at least 2 times per week...

The more physical activity that you engage in, the more health benefits you will have...

If that seems like a lot, break it down...

That is equal to 7 sessions of 30 minutes of exercise. ..

If 30 minutes is not doable, break it down as much as needed without going under 10 minutes.

Concussions should be taken seriously and individuals that think they may have sustained a concussion should be seen by a medical professional immediately...

Educate yourself about the signs and symptoms of a concussion...
Common signs and symptoms of a concussion include: headache, nausea, dizziness, pressure in the head, ringing in the ears, blurred vision...

Remember that you don't have to hit your head to sustain a concussion. Quick forward and backward motion can cause the brain to sustain an injury...

Athletic Therapists are trained to recognize, assess, and treat concussions.
