Blue Monday serves as a helpful reminder to prioritize your mental health this winter and seek support if you need it.

Try these easy ways to practice self-care today:
• Go to bed on time. If you’re feeling down, you may have trouble sleeping at night and getting up in the morning. Maintaining a regular schedule can improve sleep and help to ease symptoms of seasonal depression.
• Be active. Skating or going for a winter hike can instantly boost your mood, thanks to the feel-good hormones released when you exercise. Outdoor activities are most helpful for soothing seasonal downturns in mood, due to the exposure to daylight.

If you have questions about your mental health, or about medications you’ve been prescribed for depression or anxiety, talk to our pharmacist.

When you have a cold, you can end up blowing your nose––a lot. This can result in a nasty side effect: a chapped nose. The combination of vigorous rubbing, contact with mucus and friction with the tissue can damage the skin barrier, leaving the area red, flaky, and sore.

To care for your chapped nose…

Run a humidifier to keep your skin and nasal passages moist.
Use a nasal rinse or spray to help flush out mucus and reduce inflammation.
Drink more water, to ensure your body is hydrated from the inside out.

Speak with our pharmacist if you have any additional questions on how to soothe your chapped nose.

If you are someone living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the cold weather can make some symptoms worse. You might find that your muscles feel tighter, that you have more muscle spasms, or that it’s just harder to move when the mercury drops.

Barbara Stensland, a patient living with MS for almost eight years, shares her story on embracing winter with MS. Read her story:

During the winter, you’re spending more time indoors, breathing in triggers like dust mites and pet dander, and when you do venture out on a chilly day, inhaling the cold air can also trigger an asthma attack.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to help you breathe a little easier:
• Run a humidifier in your home, to maintain a relative humidity of 35-50%.
• Keep your home tidy by reducing clutter and dusting and vacuuming regularly.
• When you go outside, place a scarf or mask over your nose and mouth.

If you packed on a few extra pounds over the holidays, you’re not alone. Seasonal setbacks are common, and not simply due to overindulging. Stress, changes in sleep cycles and seasonal depression can all set the stage for weight gain. But you can get your health goals back on track.

Take control with these strategies:
• Establish a healthy routine of eating right, moving your body often and sleeping well every night.
• Schedule workouts (or even walks) with a friend or use a diet and fitness app for support.
• Be patient and stick with it!

Ask our pharmacist for additional tips to help you get to your healthy weight.

Everyone experiences spikes in their blood pressure at times, but usually only for short periods, like during exercise or a stressful situation. It becomes a problem when blood pressure stays higher than normal over time.

Healthy lifestyle habits including eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and getting enough physical activity, can help to reduce your chance of developing high blood pressure.

It’s not uncommon to have hands that are dry, itchy, red, tight feeling and even cracked – especially during the winter months. Frequent hand washing combined with freezing temperatures outside can spell disaster for sensitive skin.

Using a mild cleanser, gently patting your hands dry – and, most importantly – moisturizing, are all key steps you can take to get some relief. Our pharmacist can recommend soothing hand lotions, balms and creams that can help protect your skin.

In fact, did you know that studies have shown that people who frequently forget have a 30 to 40% greater chance of experiencing a flare-up of their disease?

An ear infection is an inflammation of the middle ear that happens when fluid builds up behind the eardrum. They’re common in children under five, because the tubes in their ears are very short.

If you suspect your child may have an ear infection, speak with our pharmacist for advice on when to see a doctor and how to keep your little one comfortable while they recover.

There are lots of reasons to try a plant-based diet. Here’s what it means to go meat- and animal product-free.
A vegan diet incorporates all plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, grains, and seeds. People who follow a vegetarian diet may consider also eating dairy, eggs, and honey.

If you are thinking about adding a supplement to your vegan or vegetarian diet to balance out any nutrients you might be missing, talk to our pharmacist.

Even during the coldest months of the year, our skin is still at risk of sun damage. Check out these three surprising facts to help you stay sun safe this season.
1/ UV strength doesn’t significantly decrease from summer to winter. If the sun is shining you are exposed to damaging rays, whether it’s +20C or -20C.
2/ The sun’s rays can pass through fog, haze, windows (including in the car) and reflect off snow.

3/ The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin daily, all year round.

If someone in your house is struggling with a bout of illness including vomiting and diarrhea, you aren’t alone. The stomach flu (also called gastroenteritis, which literally means inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract) is one of the most common ailments this time of year.

Stomach flu can be caused by bacteria or a parasite, but during Canadian winters, a virus is often to blame.

Learn the latest on symptoms, causes, and managing a bout of stomach flu, from the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research:
