Did you know that your scope of practice and scope of work are not the same thing? Understanding the difference matters.

Your scope of practice is defined by the Reserved Acts as outlined in the RHPA. It outlines the full range of activities you are educated, authorized, and competent to perform.

Your scope of work is defined by your employer. It reflects what you are expected and permitted to do in your current position.

In many cases, your scope of practice may be broader than your scope of work, which is why before performing a task, you should ask yourself: "Is this within my scope of work?"

As we prepare to begin a new College year on April 1, we're taking a moment to reflect on the past 12 months.

This year brought change, learning, and opportunities to strengthen how we serve Manitobans, and before we step into what's next, we're pausing to reflect on what this year has taught us

💪 Every challenge
🗣️ Every conversation
🦶 Every step forward

Growth is ongoing, and everyone plays a part - from our registrants to the public.

What's one lesson you're bringing into the new year?

This week, Tim visited SkyNorth, gaining insight into the unique environment of air medical transport and the realities of practicing in non-traditional settings.

From rotational work schedules and more remote base locations, to the complexities of providing care in aviation settings, this visit highlighted the challenges and differences paramedics face beyond ground EMS.

A few key takeaways include:

👉 The importance of labour mobility with many clinicians coming from out of province
👉 Strong interprofessional collaboration, with teams made up of ACPs & nurses
👉 The unique demands of air transport, including limited space, long rotations, and complex patient transfers

Experiences like this help inform the work we do at CPMB, ensuring regulation reflects the diverse environments registrants work in while supporting safe, competent, and ethical care.

What are Reserved Acts, and why do they matter?

Reserved Acts form part of Manitoba's health regulatory framework. They identify specific clinical activities that may only be performed by authorized health professionals.

This structure is not about limitation, it's about protection.

Reserved Acts help ensure:
👉 Appropriate education and training
👉 Clear professional accountability
👉 Consistent standards of care
👉 Protection of the public

In paramedicine, a clearly defined scope supports patient safety, reduces risk, and reinforces public confidence in the profession.
