We had a great time at the CCRHA Wheat City Derby in Brandon. Congratulations to the winner of the Long Stirrup class and recipient of a free massage treatment courtesy of SR Equine Therapy. Putting your performance horse back to work this month? Remember to ease them in and watch for signs of tightness in the muscles, just like with any athlete. This young reining mare is going back to work after a few months of light exercise and tends to hold tension in her hind end. A 5 minute release of the glutes and hamstrings has become part of her weekly routine.

Winter has hit Southern Manitoba hard over the last few weeks. Extreme cold can wreak havoc on horses’ muscles, connective tissues and joints. Keeping them warm, hydrated and moving in a safe and reasonable way can help maintain flexibility. Massage therapy can increase blood circulation and suppleness, prevent injury, and is an excellent way to keep your horse’s muscles healthy throughout the winter months, whether or not they are actively at work.
