• Peeing often and having difficulty holding urine
• Pain in the lower abdomen
• Urine that’s cloudy, foul-smelling, and/or contains a small amount of blood

Colds and the flu can result in a nasty cough, and in many cases finding the right cough syrup can help give you some relief.

If you are considering a cough syrup, remember the following:

 Always follow the directions on the package.
 Typically, cough syrups can be taken every four hours but it’s important not to take more doses in a day than are recommended.
 Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to assist in breaking up mucus and clearing congestion.

Ask our pharmacist for advice on whether a cough syrup could be helpful and if so, which one they would recommend for you.

Dry January is here, which means a growing number of Canadians will spend the first month of the year without drinking a drop of alcohol.
Whether you’ve officially signed up for Dry January or just hoping to reduce your consumption for a few weeks following the holidays, abstaining from alcohol can have benefits for your mind and body.

If you have questions about how drinking alcohol might affect some of your medications, or need support in your sobriety journey, stop by and speak with our pharmacist.

If you’ve ever had a small fluid-filled blister on or around your lips, you’ve probably had a cold sore.

These blisters are caused by a virus. Although they can be very uncomfortable and unsightly, they are not dangerous, and often heal within a few weeks without leaving a mark.

If you’re concerned you might have a cold sore, we’re here to help. our pharmacist can assess your symptoms, discuss your options, and if appropriate, prescribe the most suitable medication to treat it. Our pharmacist can also recommend ointments, lip balms, and pain medications to help you feel better faster.

When you have a cold, you can end up blowing your nose––a lot. This can result in a nasty side effect: a chapped nose. The combination of vigorous rubbing, contact with mucus and friction with the tissue can damage the skin barrier, leaving the area red, flaky, and sore.

To care for your chapped nose…

Run a humidifier to keep your skin and nasal passages moist.
Use a nasal rinse or spray to help flush out mucus and reduce inflammation.
Drink more water, to ensure your body is hydrated from the inside out.

Speak with our pharmacist if you have any additional questions on how to soothe your chapped nose.

Sneezing, an itchy nose, and red, watery eyes are all classic signs of allergic rhinitis (also known as “hay fever”). Symptoms develop when your body’s immune system reacts to an irritant in the air, like tree pollen, pet dander or mold spores.

You can’t prevent hay fever, but you can take steps to minimize your allergy symptoms.
• Avoid touching your face or rubbing your nose and eyes.
• Keep your windows closed on days when pollen counts are high even throughout the fall months.
• Use filters in your vacuum and air conditioner.
• Wash your hands often, especially after playing with pets.

If someone in your house is struggling with a bout of illness including vomiting and diarrhea, you aren’t alone. The stomach flu (also called gastroenteritis, which literally means inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract) is one of the most common ailments this time of year.

Stomach flu can be caused by bacteria or a parasite, but during Canadian winters, a virus is often to blame.

During the winter, you’re spending more time indoors, breathing in triggers like dust mites and pet dander, and when you do venture out on a chilly day, inhaling the cold air can also trigger an asthma attack.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to help you breathe a little easier:
• Run a humidifier in your home, to maintain a relative humidity of 35-50%.
• Keep your home tidy by reducing clutter and dusting and vacuuming regularly.
• When you go outside, place a scarf or mask over your nose and mouth.
