🧡National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Day🧡

September 30th marks the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a day for us to reflect, learn, and understand the action needed.

A call on everyone, including ourselves, to listen, learn and unlearn, with and from Indigenous Peoples and Communities. We are committed to understanding and supporting the impacts that residential schools and colonialism has played in the health and well-being of Indigenous children and their families.

Every Child Matters.

📣Welcome SLP Karen📣

We are so excited to have Karen joining the Berkowitz TheraPeds team!!

Karen completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba in 2016. She then moved to Montreal for two years to complete her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (S-LP) at McGill University. She gained invaluable experience providing S-LP services to children attending First Nations schools across Manitoba for multiple years, and currently works as an S-LP in a school division in Winnipeg.

Karen has worked with preschoolers, children and teens of various skill and developmental levels. She is passionate about finding creative ways to help children express their ideas, feelings, and needs, and has significant experience using speech-generating devices and visual supports to help them communicate. Karen is always incorporating the child and family’s perspective into the services she provides, and believes that communication skills are best built through play and fun experiences.

Aside from work, Karen loves trying out a variety of new activities and sports with her husband. She also can’t turn down an opportunity to try a new restaurant, and is always looking for new recipes to try.

Please share a warm welcome to our newest S-LP, Karen!!

🧹Contain the Mess🧹

As pediatric clinicians we are all about messy play! But we also know that cleaning up that mess is not ideal.

Over the years we have found some fun and easy ways to keep the mess contained! All the messy play fun for your kiddos, with hopefully less of the cleanup for you!!

⚪️ Bring the play into a kiddie pool - use a plastic or inflatable kiddie pool to contain the mess. Whether you fill the pool with water, rice or toys, or place your sensory bin within the pool, the fun will be endless, the mess will not!

⚪️ Make bath time, mess time - take your messy play into the bathtub, then spray it all down with soap and water! That can be part of the messy play too!

⚪️ DIY - create a contained space with some chairs or bins and a fitted sheet. They also make draw string play mats that you can buy and contain all the mess in one space.

⚪️ Plastic tablecloth for the win - it may seem simple but placing a plastic tablecloth or shower curtain on the ground can go a long way! Try one under the table or set the messy play right on top!

Of course some days you just don’t want the mess in your house at all and that is ok! When in doubt take the messy play outside! Puddles, mud, leaves, rocks, sticks, the play ideas are endless!

And if you truly don’t want the mess, bring them to OT! We’re always happy to get messy, and we will do the clean up!

🟣International Women’s Day🟣

I am so amazed by all the incredible women that I have met along my journey to create Berkowitz TheraPeds. There are the women who have motivated me, inspired me, challenged me, and supported me. There are the women who made me who I am today, and the women who make me want to keep learning and growing. I want to say Happy International Women’s Day to all the strong, powerful, and capable women, who have taught me that we do not always have to be strong, powerful, and capable. The women who have taught me to ask for help, advocate, be weird and truly myself and to do our best to take a break every once in a while!!

Of course I also want to say the biggest thank you to the women who make up the Berkowitz TheraPeds team! I am so grateful and honoured to work with each of you.

Happy International Women’s Day!

📣Welcome OT Amy📣

We are so excited to welcome Amy to the Berkowitz TheraPeds team!

Amy graduated from the University of Manitoba with her master’s degree in occupational therapy in 2006. Amy has been privileged to work with people of all ages and support their goals related to physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. She has had the opportunity to work in several health care settings, including work in Winnipeg and in Australia.

Amy spent over a decade volunteering with a therapeutic horseback riding program for children and youth. She has a passion for teaching mindfulness, calming, and coping strategies to support little ones (and big ones) with their emotions and wellbeing. She values lifelong learning and has training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.

She is passionate about child and adolescent mental health and currently has a role facilitating cognitive behavioural therapy groups and teaching classes for children and families. She supports all her clients and families to gain understanding of their sensory and emotional needs, while learning skills to manage and thrive in their daily tasks. Amy believes in meeting her clients where they are at and being a guide as they develop goals and strategies.

When she is not working as an OT, Amy loves spending time with her twins, playing games, exploring, and trying new things.

Amy is looking forward to joining the Berkowitz TheraPeds team! She is now accepting new clients!
