March 22 marks International Water Day - A day highlighting the importance and fragility of this vital resource. Much like water, Manitoba Direct Support Professionals play a vital role in the lives of Manitobans living with an intellectual disability. Over 770 DSPs will provide support services to a Manitoban living with an intellectual disability through the course of their lifetime. We need to ensure that these DSPs are well-trained and well-paid. We are asking Manitoba to increase DSP starting wages to $19.12/hour and to keep a consistent 60% spread above minimum wage going forward. Along with this should come the development and implementation of robust training standards for this important workforce. We can do this, Manitoba! Email your MLA today to share this info with them. We might be a bit of a broken record on this one BUT...

STAY SAFE: We have the collective responsibility to limit the spread of COVID19, not only for our own health, but also for the health of Winnipeg's most vulnerable citizens. We ask that you join Barrier Free Manitoba's call to ensure that the Province of Manitoba has a plan in place in the event of hospitals reaching capacity. Triage protocols are needed to protect people against discrimination in health care. Hope is not a plan. Equal access to healthcare for people with disabilities is a right guaranteed under the Manitoba Human Rights code. If you have twitter, you can access the tweet below and help spread the word.

At least once per winter, Winnipegger Allen Mankewich’s wheelchair loses traction and spills over onto an icy sidewalk. Less than two weeks after winter conditions set in for the season, it’s happened again.

ATTENTION: CLdS participants

SUBJECT: Planning for the Reopening of Community Living disABILITY Services Day Services

From the Province, "As Manitoba continues to reopen the economy and lessen or eliminate COVID-19 prevention orders, many Community Living disABILITY Services (CLDS) participants, their families, support networks and service providers are wondering when day services can resume for participants who would like to return to these services.

The department understands that CLDS participants benefit from day services and the social connections the service provides. The department also recognizes that some CLDS participants are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 or at higher risk of severe outcomes if they contract the virus than other members of the population. Given these
and other important factors, including the daytime support needs of participants, service provider capacity, public health direction and a potential fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Manitoba, careful planning for the reopening of day services needs to occur.

The department is currently planning for a gradual reopening of CLDS day services beginning this fall. In the coming weeks, the department will be engaging with CLDS participants, their support networks and service providers to inform the details of this plan."

People with intellectual disabilities are sexual beings who want to be loved. Choosing who you love is fundamental to who we are as people, and inclusion is incomplete if it does not include everyone.

The discovery of 215 children's bodies at the Kamploops Residential School is a stark & harsh reminder of the brutality of colonialism, and the barbaric policies of exclusion. Inclusion is incomplete if it does not include people of ALL races, cultures and identities. We must never forget the lost lives and the lost dreams of 215 children, and we must learn the true history and not shy away from uncomfortable truths. Inclusion Winnipeg staff have been recommended a free course called Indigenous Canada offered by the University of Alberta. There is a $60 charge if you want a certificate.

COURSE DETAILS: The University of Alberta offers a 12 lesson course (12 modules and 2 hours per module). One module, “Killing the Indian in the Child”, investigates the Residential School experience. From the course description "Students can expect to acquire a basic familiarity with Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal relationships". Please click on the link below for more information:
