THE SHALA IS CLOSED

On July 28, 2022, Ashtanga Yoga Winnipeg (in its present form) closed its doors. We began on the day after the new moon in November 2019 and ended on the new moon in July. And, continuing this theme of new beginnings, I am making a new home on the west coast.

As Mysore students in Winnipeg, we have benefitted greatly from the work of Jonathan Austman who opened his first shala on McDermott Avenue in 2004. His dedication to and belief in in this practice inspired so many of us to make it a priority in our lives, and go deeper, to study, to try to understand ourselves better, and maybe teach. I am forever grateful to him.

I will miss our little shala which was open only a few months before the global pandemic made it unsafe to be in one room together. The perfect practice for a pandemic, we continued to practice Ashtanga either on our own or virtually, as a group. It has been my privilege to bear witness to the growth and development of the students here and to learn so much from their experience.

Om shanti,
Shivaun

Remembering Jonathan.

Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light your way.
- Rabindranath Tagore

Our 2-D shala has been practicing online for 15 months with a few months of in-person practice last summer. We are so fortunate to be able to come together this way, to practice and connect. We show up each day because we can see how the practice supports and sustains us. And because we know that the energy and attention of our practice supports and holds space for others.

Online Mysore/Led Ashtanga classes continue in accordance with Manitoba health orders. See our website or dm for details.

Back to 2-D🖥🧘‍♂️

With the increase in COVID-19 cases in Winnipeg and tighter government restrictions, we are going back to the 2-D/virtual shala with in-home practice only. This is what we’ve trained for. We’ve done it before and we know it works. Practicing together online supports everyone’s practice and keeps us all connected. We will reassess in mid-November.

Remembering Jonathan

August 1st is the one year anniversary of Jonathan Austman's death by su***de. Jonathan was a friend, teacher, mentor, and colleague to many of us. Ashtanga Yoga and Mysore practice exist and thrive in Winnipeg - it is primarily due to his efforts, his desire to be of service, and his faith that the practice works.

We all hold multitudes within us - elements of luminosity and radiance, but also darkness and shadow - Jonathan was no exception. There were shadows and pain that few people were allowed to see. If there is any meaning in losing Jonathan too soon, perhaps it's that we need to drop our filters and recognize and appreciate the essential wholeness and perfection in everyone, including ourselves. By cultivating qualities of sattva (i.e. clarity, lucidity, harmony) in our relationships, our work, and our daily interactions with others, we can hold space for each other - standing alongside with kindness, without judgement, so that each one of us may come to wisdom and awareness in our own time, on our own path. Through practice, we can learn to let go of fear, to have the courage to be vulnerable, to connect, and take care of each other.

There is an Intermediate Series pose called supta vajrasana, or reclining thunderbolt pose, where you sit in lotus with your arms behind your back and, if possible, hold your big toes. With the help of a teacher or fellow student holding your hands and bracing your knees with their legs, you lean back, touch your head to the floor, and come back up again several times. It requires that you place your trust in this other person to keep you from falling on your head. After you come up the last time, it is traditional to bring your hands together in front of your heart and bow to each other in thanks to your teacher or helper. In these COVID-19 days of "flying solo," I either wedge my knees under the bed at home, or fall back on my elbows and awkwardly push myself up. Then, I bring my hands together and bow to the place where my teacher would have been.

It’s about the journey, not the destination. At times the path is smooth and steady, at others it is difficult and painful. Both are necessary and have a lot to teach us. Step on the path, enjoy the ride and soak up the scenery.

Moon Day Meditation 7:45-8:30PM via Zoom
Take rest. Notice the effects.
As said today, when we honour ritual around practice, it conditions the deep mind and allows you to pace yourself, to be patient, unattached and non-grasping. To integrate Yama and niyama into your practice. It also honours the teachers of the teachers of the teachers and places the practice in context, respecting its beginnings and the ones who came before.

Our Story

Ashtanga Yoga Winnipeg is an encouraging and supportive community of students and teachers who practice together. We are inspired by the lineage of teachers and scholars who point the way, in particular Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that even the smallest effort in the opposite direction (meaning effort to turn one’s attention inward versus outward), has a significant impact. This tiny bit of effort chips away at the less than effective patterns we have acquired over our lifetime, and replaces them with new, more positive habits and patterns that make it possible to experience and respond to the fullness of life, the ups and downs. So we practice, little by little, with discipline, but also gentleness, and an open and curious mind.
