Walking into the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on the night of September 4, you’d have been excused for thinking you had arrived backstage at an AC/DC concert. Rosé Soirée was a full-throttle celebration of giving, glam, and guitars this year…with attitude!

St. Boniface Hospital Foundation’s sixth annual fundraising gala came roaring back under the banner of Rock & Roses, a decadent classic rock theme. The evening raised more than $130,000 for the Hospital’s Women’s Heart Health Research program.

has been proudly running its Art Easel Fundraising Program at St. Boniface Hospital for almost 2 years — and as of June 30, we’ve raised more than $6,200 for ongoing patient care and research! 🙌🖼️❤️

“From our humble beginnings in 2015, Funding Innovation has established a network of over 2,000 art easel fundraising locations across Canada, which have collectively raised more than $16 million in non-designated donation income for the charitable causes we have the honour and privilege of supporting.” – Ron Gardner, President of Funding Innovation 🎨🇨🇦

Henry Suarez woke up at St. Boniface Hospital. He had made it to Winnipeg by air ambulance service, which was already a miracle.

Dr. Jonathan Hong, a surgeon with Cardiac Sciences at the Hospital, was standing over his bed in pre-op.

“You know how you can tell when someone is really good at their craft and their trade? Dr. Hong radiated that confidence. I could feel it from everyone in that room, which gave me hope,” remembered Suarez, 48. “I didn’t feel as afraid at that moment.”

Only hours earlier, he was working on his computer at home in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It was March of 2025, and a snowstorm blew outside. Little did he know, his life was about to change in an instant.

Researchers at St. Boniface Hospital, led by Dr. Renée Douville, are uncovering new connections between viruses and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and ALS.

Recent lab work by students Alex Vandenakker (pictured on the right) and Snigdda Sharma shows that viral proteins may accelerate the buildup of toxic Tau - which is a key contributor to Alzheimer’s - in fruit flies. Their findings suggest antiviral therapies could be a promising path forward.

The team has also submitted a new manuscript, “Implications of virus-induced stress granules in tauopathies,” exploring how virus-triggered protein interactions may drive disease progression in the brain.

In a major milestone on May 20, Cardiac Sciences successfully enrolled the first-ever patient in Canada into the EMPOWER Clinical Trial. This groundbreaking study is exploring a new, minimally invasive treatment for people living with heart failure and mitral regurgitation: a condition in which the heart valve doesn’t close properly.

In a mix of light rain and sunshine, the 2025 National Bank Cardiac Classic brought together 25 teams and more than 100 golfers at Niakwa Country Club, all teeing off for a cause close to the heart. 💙

Thanks to their generosity, over $95,000 was raised to support cardiac care and research at St. Boniface Hospital. Half of the funds will bring Manitoba its first Excimer laser lead extraction system — a game-changing technology that improves safety and recovery for patients in the Electrophysiology (EP) lab. The other half will fuel groundbreaking research at the Albrechtsen Research Centre.

“This is Winnipeg’s premier golf experience, in my opinion,” said emcee Greg Mackling. And it’s one that’s helping thousands of Manitobans celebrate more milestones.
