📢 Regulation Advocacy Series – Post #4
🌍 Interprovincial & International Mobility: Building Bridges for Massage Therapists

As Manitoba moves toward establishing a regulatory college for massage therapy, one key goal is to create a system that supports fluid movement of qualified therapists across provinces and borders.

✅ The new college will need to establish clear policies for application and registration, recognizing interprovincial and internationally qualified candidates through a structured process—helping skilled professionals join the Manitoba workforce efficiently.

⏳ RMTSMB is advocating for these policies to be timely and financially mindful, ensuring no unnecessary delays or costs hinder therapists from practicing here.

🤞 Professional feedback is also hoping for a smoother transition between regulated and unregulated provinces, making it easier for all massage therapists to work where they choose.

🤝 Our vision is a regulatory framework that balances rigorous standards with practical access, supporting workforce mobility and strengthening the profession in Manitoba and beyond.

🦟🌍 World Mosquito Day – August 20th 🌍🦟

Summer in Manitoba means mosquitoes — and for massage therapists and clients, those bites can cause itching and skin irritation that affect treatment comfort.

Here are some easy tips you can share with your clients to help them stay bite-free and relaxed during their sessions:

🌿 Use natural repellents before outdoor activities — lemon eucalyptus, lavender, or tea tree oils work great!
💧 Keep skin moisturized to help soothe any bites or irritation.
🧴 Avoid scratching bites to prevent inflammation and skin sensitivity.
🛁 Recommend a cool bath with oatmeal or baking soda to reduce itching.
💆‍♀️ During massage, if clients mention itchy bites, adjust pressure and techniques to avoid discomfort.

As therapists, promoting these simple self-care habits helps your clients enjoy the full benefits of massage—even in mosquito season!

👐 We’ve Known the Difference Since Day One

When it comes to continuing competency, there’s often confusion about who is responsible for mandating it.

As confirmed by Manitoba’s Minister of Health —
✅ Associations (like RMTSMB) can offer and support professional development opportunities.
❌ Only a Regulatory College of Massage Therapy can mandate continuing competency programs

Associations financially benefit by mandating courses for their members — even though it’s not their legal role — instead of preparing members for the reality of regulation.

The RMTSMB approach is sometimes looked down upon by those who expect self-regulation from an association. But we have chosen to respect the legal division between an association and a regulator.

From the start, RMTSMB has taken a principled, forward-thinking approach:
💡 Offering high-quality, relevant professional development opportunities.
🔄 Encouraging a progressive self-assessment model of continuing competency — similar to other regulated healthcare professions.
📈 Staying focused on your long-term success by aligning with what regulation will actually require in the future.

Our goal isn’t to profit from mandatory courses — it’s to prepare, support, and empower RMTs for a regulated future while keeping your professional growth in your control.

We encourage our members to inform RMT's who may be interested in the clarification especially prior to any mandated upcoming CCE credit deadlines.

💬 Your profession. Your growth. Your future.
That’s the RMTSMB way.

🧘‍♀️ RMTSMB Stretch of the Month
🔹 Wrist & Forearm Release

Massage therapy is hands-on (pun intended)and your wrists, forearms, and thumbs take the brunt of it every day. This month’s stretch is designed to relieve tension, improve circulation, and help prevent repetitive strain injuries.

👉 How to do it:

Extend one arm straight in front of you, palm facing up.

With your opposite hand, gently pull your fingers down and back toward the floor.

Hold for 20–30 seconds. You should feel a stretch through your forearm and wrist.

Repeat on the other side.

Do 2–3 rounds per arm, especially between clients or at the end of your day.

👐 Bonus: Follow with gentle wrist circles and shake out your hands to reset muscle tension.

📅 Stay tuned each month for more therapist-focused stretches to keep you feeling strong, balanced, and injury-free.

📢 Regulation Advocacy Series – Post #2
🔍 Cost Effectiveness vs Salary: What Regulation Really Means for You

As we move toward regulation of the massage therapy profession in Manitoba, it's important to address a common concern: Will regulation increase costs or impact my income?

✅ The reality: Regulation is designed to protect the public and elevate professional standards, not to impose unnecessary financial burdens on therapists.

📉 Cost effectiveness: Most provinces with regulation have found ways to keep registration and operational costs reasonable through transparent structures and government collaboration.

💼 Salary protection: Regulation strengthens public trust, improves insurance relations, and opens doors to more healthcare integration—all of which support long-term income growth.

✅ College Fees: While a regulatory college will require a registration fee, RMTSMB is committed to advocating for a mindful and financially responsible budget during its creation. Just as we’ve kept our own association fees low and transparent for over a decade, financial accountability remains a top priority for the RMTSMB We want to ensure the development of the college is not a copy-and-paste of wasteful spending models currently being experienced elsewhere. Instead, we will push for a cost-effective, inclusive budget that reflects the needs, realities and the progression of massage therapists in Manitoba.

🕰️ Flexible Careers: Massage therapy has always been a profession that supports a wide range of work styles—from full-time clinical practice to part-time schedules that fit around family, school, or other commitments. Regulation won’t change that.

💬 Let’s focus on the facts, not fear. RMTSMB will continue to represent your voice, keeping costs reasonable and the profession accessible for all.
