Debwetamowin: Dismantling Implicit Bias and Racism in Manitoba's Response to HIV-STBBI Webinar with Village Lab

Date: Thursday March 5 from 2 - 3pm (CST)

Manitoba has the highest rate of HIV in Canada. The overrepresentation of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit), as well as African, Caribbean, and Black communities among those newly diagnosed is directly tied to systemic racism resulting from ongoing colonialism across these lands. "The Debwetamowin Study" gathered input from community members and service providers on how various policies in healthcare, justice, and housing impact HIV outcomes. Experiences of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism within these systems are prevalent. The findings aim to identify colonial policies contributing to the epidemic, with a community guiding circle of Indigenous and African, Caribbean, and Black members working on recommendations for systemic improvements to enhance well-being for those living with HIV.

Join us as we share findings and initial recommendations for structural changes needed to address the rising rates of HIV in the province of Manitoba to enhance the well-being of both Indigenous and African, Caribbean, and Black communities.

Village Lab Presenters: Dr. Albert McLeod, Tara Christianson, Patricia Ukoli, Melissa Morris
The Debwetamowin study is led by Dr. Rusty Souleymanov (Principal Investigator and Village Lab Director)

Winters not over yet! We need your mittens! 🧤❄️🥶

We are putting a call out for donation of gently used or new mittens or gloves to Nine Circles Community Health Centre! We see over 35,000 individual visits per year and this cold snap is dangerous for those who are unsheltered.

Drop off your items to 705 Broadway from Monday to Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Thank you!

Over the past two years, Nine Circles has been leading stigma-reduction work across Manitoba.

This isn’t just about delivering workshops — it’s about strengthening systems, supporting providers, and addressing stigma at a structural level.

We’re proud of this work and will be sharing more in the coming weeks.
