What is Extraoral Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves (not electrical shocks) to stimulate healing in painful or injured areas of the body. It helps break down scar tissue, improve blood circulation, and speed up recovery. Think of it like a “reset button” for healing tissues that have been slow to recover on their own.
Common Conditions Treated
1️⃣ Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)
What it is: A painful condition caused by inflammation in the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of your foot. It often feels like a stabbing pain in the heel, especially in the morning.
How Shockwave Helps: It stimulates healing in the inflamed tissue, reduces pain, and helps break down small calcifications (heel spurs) that might worsen things.
2️⃣ Shoulder Impingement (Pinched Shoulder Tendons)
What it is: When the tendons in your shoulder get pinched between the bones, causing pain and difficulty lifting your arm. It’s common in people who do a lot of overhead movements (like painters, swimmers, or even those who sit at a desk with poor posture).
How Shockwave Helps: It reduces swelling, breaks down small calcium deposits that might be causing irritation, and promotes tendon healing—so you can move your shoulder more freely with less pain.
3️⃣ Bursitis (Swollen Joint Cushions)
What it is: Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joints. When they get inflamed (often in the hip, shoulder, or knee), it causes pain and stiffness. This often happens due to repetitive movements, pressure, or injury.
How Shockwave Helps: It increases blood flow to the area, reduces inflammation, and helps the body absorb built-up scar tissue, leading to pain relief and better mobility.
How Our Chiropractors & Physiotherapists at Healthview.ca Use Shockwave Therapy
Our chiropractors and physiotherapists integrate shockwave therapy into a full treatment plan. Depending on your condition, we might combine it with:
✔️ Chiropractic Adjustments – to improve joint function
✔️ Physiotherapy Exercises – to strengthen and stretch the affected area
✔️ Manual Therapy & Soft Tissue Work – to release tight muscles and improve mobility
Most patients notice improvement after just a few treatments, making it an excellent option for stubborn pain that hasn’t responded to other therapies.
If you or someone you know is struggling with heel pain, shoulder pain, or joint bursitis, book a consultation with our Healthview.ca team to see if shockwave therapy could help!
