A little late to the party - that doesn’t mean I still can’t talk about it 😬🧠
Those good ole concussion injuries. Face it, nobody wants to be told they most likely have a concussion, let alone have to then stop all their current physical activities at that moment. Not going to lie, I was there once upon a time as an athlete, and ifs not fun.
Athletic Therapists are experts in the assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (concussions). As part of our scope of practice, we are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms, and how to act upon such an injury. We also help the patient and/or athlete with a specific return to work/school/sport protocol that will help you get back to doing what you love most. 🫱🏼🫲🏿
It is important to listen to what our bodies are telling us when we start to integrate physical activities back into our routine following a head injury. The goal is to progress from being able to do basic daily life tasks, to returning without restrictions to your sport/primary activity without an onset of new or worsening of signs and symptoms. 🫡
Because it is an « invisible injury », it’s hard to accept the fact that even if you’re feeling fine in that moment, your brain still needs that time to recover from the trauma, and heal in such a way that you don’t put yourself in further danger when returning to your said activity.
Please trust me when I tell you this: my goal as an Athletic Therapist is not to sit you out because I feel like it. My goal is to get you back to whatever it is you’re doing SAFELY. When we ignore the signs and symptoms, we don’t allow the injury to heal, and in worst case scenarios, this may lead to fatal consequences in your health overall. 🤕
