A little late to the party - that doesn’t mean I still can’t talk about it 😬🧠

Those good ole concussion injuries. Face it, nobody wants to be told they most likely have a concussion, let alone have to then stop all their current physical activities at that moment. Not going to lie, I was there once upon a time as an athlete, and ifs not fun.

Athletic Therapists are experts in the assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (concussions). As part of our scope of practice, we are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms, and how to act upon such an injury. We also help the patient and/or athlete with a specific return to work/school/sport protocol that will help you get back to doing what you love most. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏿

It is important to listen to what our bodies are telling us when we start to integrate physical activities back into our routine following a head injury. The goal is to progress from being able to do basic daily life tasks, to returning without restrictions to your sport/primary activity without an onset of new or worsening of signs and symptoms. 🫡

Because it is an « invisible injury », it’s hard to accept the fact that even if you’re feeling fine in that moment, your brain still needs that time to recover from the trauma, and heal in such a way that you don’t put yourself in further danger when returning to your said activity.

Please trust me when I tell you this: my goal as an Athletic Therapist is not to sit you out because I feel like it. My goal is to get you back to whatever it is you’re doing SAFELY. When we ignore the signs and symptoms, we don’t allow the injury to heal, and in worst case scenarios, this may lead to fatal consequences in your health overall. 🤕

Got more questions? Feel free to ask, or send me a message! Stay safe my friends 🥳.

HOME GAME EDITION!

GAME DAY: ATHLETIC THERAPIST EDITION. 😤

First game of the regular season in the books.

Today was a « travel game », so I have a little less responsibilities than the hosting AT. However, my turn is coming up next week when our team will have their home opener, and I will be the hosting AT. So stay tuned! 👀

Also, shout out to Dave for not only getting our girls a post-game treat, but for always coming through and getting me something too! The brownie was amazing! 🤩

Game days are my favourite. I can’t wait to show you guys what our home games look like. 🥳🥰

Behind-the-Scenes: MEDIA DAY 📸📸

Not a typical Athletic Therapy educational post, but a fun snippet of what also goes on in the back before the start of a new athletic season!

Why am I there? Well, Athletic Therapists are also part of the team/staff! Working alongside the coaches to maximize athlete performance (on the injury and rehabilitation side) also makes us a crucial component of a sports team. We work hard in all seasons of sports, why not also have some fun on the job as well? 🥳

Also, in my opinion - media day always gets me hyped up for the upcoming season. 💪🏻🤩

More behind-the-scenes! 🎥

What? I’m telling you that AT’s don’t just show up with their f***y packs to field events and watch the game? 😮That’s right, my friend. 😏

Gathering pre-season medical history forms, distributing relevant resources for athlete education, and going over season expectations and protocols are just a few of the many other things we have to get done. 📑

Over the off-season, I have been preparing my Emergency Action Plan, medical forms, Return-to-Play Protocols (MSK and Concussions), and other useful documents that will be readily available to me and any other athlete and important staff member during the regular season. 📋✅

These forms get put in their respective folders and put away so that only I can have access to them (patient confidentiality is key).

Since the women’s soccer team is starting their season shortly, I attended their orientation today to give out these things, introduce myself to the new players, and get my ducks in order so they can start their season safely and effectively. 💪🏻

Thanks for watching!

Part ✌🏼of the Hammies series 🤩

It’s important to note that everybody heals differently and at their own pace. For some it may take longer to recover while others bounce back sooner - this does not define your physical capabilities whatsoever. 💪🏻

Majority of musculoskeletal injuries follow the same path of tissue healing, and Certified Athletic Therapists follow this spectrum to give the best possible results for your rehabilitation. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏿

I’ve highlighted the main components pertaining to a hamstring strain, but that doesn’t mean that other aspects such as core, balance, proprioception, flexibility, etc., aren’t as important - because they are still a big part of your Rehabilitation Program!

From experiencing a strain myself, to working alongside patients, athletes (from recreational to professional) in field and clinic, exercises focusing on the eccentric strength of the hamstrings are a great step towards a successful return to play outcome. Peer-reviewed research also expresses these statements. 🧠

Hamstrings are often injured during an eccentric contraction (the terminal phase of your leg swing while running/sprinting, decelerating from a high speed, accidentally slipping, etc). So, it is logical to also include eccentric strength in your rehabilitation to prepare those suckers while they work under such tensile loads. 🏋🏽‍♀️

Happy Monday!

The Hammies 🦵🏼

You ever see someone grab the back of their leg in pain and say « I think I pulled something »? This could most definitely be your hamstring muscle(s).

Fun fact 🧠: the semitendinosus muscle is named as such due to its more « tendinous » look. On pictures, you’ll notice the tendon is a lot longer compared to its roommate, the semimembranosus muscle.
And, well, unfortunately poor old biceps femoris hangs out on the lateral side of your thigh, leaving them a little lonely. 😔

Slipping on ice is a great way to strain those muscles, because we are stretching the muscle group past its point of elasticity. ❄️

In sports, the act of decelerating really suddenly is a very common cause of injury. That’s why in rehabilitation, exercises such as the hamstring Nordic curls, or other eccentrically-focused exercises are a good way to help strengthen those bad boys in preparation for those fast decelerating movements. 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏻

Hopefully I passed along a little knowledge to you. Like my post and follow me for more things Athletic Therapy 🤩.

A few weeks ago, I spent my time completing my certification as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). This new bridging course allowed me to upgrade from my current certification as a Sport First Responder, and now allows me to give more advanced emergency care with my new and previous skills!

It was an intense 30 hours of learning content, demonstrating/learning skills and going through multiple emergency scenarios. As exhausted as I was, I had so much fun, and I am super glad to have taken this step to help my career as an Athletic Therapist!

Thanks to John Boulay and Ben Trunzo for running the course and making it super engaging, informative and fun! Learning from these two experts in the field and hear all the crazy stories made it for an enjoyable time.

This weekend I had the privilege to undergo my certification to become a First Aid Instructor! ⛑️🩹

This has been a goal of mine for over a year and this time I finally did it. An amazing time and super thankful to have done it with , a training partner for The Canadian Red Cross. The instructors really helped me understand the whole process behind lesson planning, how to accommodate different styles of learning, and how to effectively manage my time when teaching a group of people.

I can’t wait to take on my practical skills and now be able to teach it to you! Can’t wait to share more with what’s to come! 🥳
